LT tires vs P tires.

I need to buy new tires for our camper but am not sure what to buy.
Sticker on door says P235/75/15 but I assume this sticker was on there before van was converted.
Last tires I bought were LT235/75/15
Price difference is LT's $110.00 vs P's $82.00
I never drive enough to wear them out.
Load range is 104 compared to 105
Camper is about 6700 lbs.
The LT's I am looking at are Walmart Nexen which brand I have on my car that I am happy with.
The P's are Goodyear Wrangler.
I am just wondering if the P's would be okay.

OKAY FIRE AWAY.
  • I have used Michelin LTX M&S on a 24ft Trailite C, a 28 ft Winnebago Aspect C and my current Pleasureway Plateau TS. LT range, ie LTX have been recommended by tire professionals but, there are other brands of equal or better load ratings ie Nexen have good tires. Tire age is a factor of use. Certainly LT would be my first choice given weight of vehicle indicated. I am not aware of an LTX tire being "derated". Even my friend's F150 truck uses them.Odd!
  • p235/75/15 come in standard and Xtra load versions. you want the XL if choosing P over LT

LT tires are already derated for taller vehicles

LT tires must be inflated more to carry the same weight as p/XL, and ride rougher at these higher pressures
  • I just bought Nexen lt 235/75/15 Radian at II 's for the rear. Very solid ride and not noisy. In your neck of the woods it would be a wise choice. According to reviews on line they are good on snow and ice. I need them for dirt roads.
  • LT hands down given the choice.

    This LT tire?

    This GY?

That is kinda the low end Goodyear so I would not expect miracles here.
GY Duratrac, Armortrac, Silent Armor are the good rubber from Goodyear that I would probably place above the WM LT even if P rated. These will cost more.
  • I would go with LT's and the highest load range made for the size required.
Safety isn't something to be frugal with.

As a general rule, P-metric load tires are for passenger cars and LT tires are for light truck. However, since the original door sticker says P235R75-15, it does raise an issue. Found this article by Tire Rack that discusses reasoning on the use of P-metric tires on trucks.

The article uses your exact tire size and does state the tire, if mounted on a truck (higher center of gravity), would be downrated to 91% of an automobile. The chart claims the tire would carry 2,028 lbs if on a Car and 1,845 lbs if on a Light Truck. You state that your conversion van weighs 6,700 lbs and if the load is fairly equally distributed, the 4 tires should be able to carry 7,380 lbs at 35 psig. You might want to have the van weighed by axle just to be sure.
  • You want the most tire you can get. Even a stock full sized van, let alone one that has been modified into an RV, handles much better and can safely carry a larger load using LT tires.
  • With the weight of your rig I would want the LT tires. P tires are
passenger tires as in a car. Most tire shops wouldn't offer or
let you purchase a P tire. They are worth the extra money.

  • "P" have a softer ride since the side walls are softer, I would go with the LT tires if it were me, I think it is fair to compare prices since safety doesn't care about price.
