The best place to get an accurate answer to this question is on the Sprinter Source Forum. Go to the T1N section and ask.

You need to become familiar with the Mercedes specification and approval system.. In correct oils can cause clogging of the EGR valve and other issues.

Sprinters just sip DEF. MB estimates the standard 4.9 gal tank is good for 10,000 miles. DEF warning light comes un when half empty, so driver had 5,000 miles to figure out what the warning light means. I don't know about limp mode, but I really doubt anybody gets that far. Probably just get it filled at the 10,000 mile service.

No problema.
I was talking with a Sprinter van owner recently in a campground with his hood up. He had the Mercedes diesel. I asked him where the DEF fill was. He said "what is DEF?"

Time to head for town and buy some DEF. He was thankful.

If DEF goes low does the vehicle go into "limp" mode?

Yes. Eventually. There are warnings, and then when the DEF supply is gone, limp mode isn't far behind, after the "# of starts remaining" is 0.
Mike. Comments are anecdotal or personal opinions, and worth what you paid for them.

Yes, agree, it should be OK as long as it's specced for the MB engine. Any full synthetic diesel oil will work in a pinch. The 5W means it will be a little more viscous when cold started, but the difference isn't that much. Let it warm up a bit longer before driving.
