Mercedes Dodge Sprinter Winnebago VIEW Key & Fob

I need to get a second key/fob for my 2007 Mercedes Winnebago VIEW 23H. I had a key made at a local store but it doesn't work: the Mercedes/Dodge SPRINTER truck on which the 23H is built comes up with "Start Error" when I try to use the plain duplicate key. Apparently the vehicle requires the "fob" part which contains a chip which transmits a signal to the Sprinter van/truck to allow a start. Going to the Mercedes dealer I'm sure will cost big bucks. Any ideas?

The key, fob, and programming is about $450. Allegedly there is (or was)one source that can program the key alone for the pre 07 chassis. The key itself has a non-powered chip that responds to a query by the switch. You can leave the FOB anywhere in the cab and use the key alone to start the engine.

A few 07 and later Sprinters are subject to a "no-start" problem. Several threads on the View/Navion forum on that problem. All of us that had the problem have speculations, but "the" fix has never been documented. Mine was fixed with a new key and fob.

My local keysmith said he could get me the fob but it costs about $200.00. Fortunately I found my second keyset before buying.

If it's the standard Mercedes key it must be programmed into the vehicles computer.

If it's the older style as used in the Dodge / Frieghtliner the key itself can be reprogrammed to duplicate an existing key.

Shame on the locksmith who cut you a key without reprogramming it for you though!!!

Search the View-Navion forums (3 including the ones for mods and tech) on Yahoo. I recall some discussion of this there. You may have to join to search or post.

I believe with vehicles like this the only way is via a dealer. They will reprogram all your key fobs. Not cheap, either.
