;Moab, UT Route Advice

Just thinking about visiting Moab on the recommendation of some friends and wondering about the best routes to get there, RV parks and etc.

We would be going south from Idaho Falls and continuing South to Sedona.

Thank for any input.
  • Just a few miles south of Pocatello turn off I15 at Magammon ID. Head east 8 miles to visit the hot springs at Lava Hot Springs. Travel east from there then south by different options. Great countryside, missing SLC ..
  • September/October is a beautiful time to be there but remember it is the begining of the snowbird migration to the southwest. So there is no behind the season at that time of the year. To all of the snowbirds it is just the begining of the season. If you have the time try to rent an off road vehicle or take an off road tour. It is fun and the sights are unforgetable.
  • Since you have a 43' MH I wouldn't advise taking 89A into Sedona from I-40. It's steep and twisty. Instead, go to Flagstaff and take I-17 south and then west on (279 I believe - I don't have a map handy) to Sedona.
  • Thanks for all the responses. We may give it a go even if it means going through SLC which I normally avoid like the plague.

Right now our plans are to head S. the end of Sept/early Oct so hopefully behind the "season" and perhaps less crowded.

As to what we'll do, haven't thought about very much but some sightseeing, perhaps some golf, and look around for a ghost town. Might even try an off road trail just for giggles.
  • We stay at the Moab Rim Camp Park, 1900 South Highway 191, Moab, Utah you can call toll free 1-888-599-6622 Very nice park 60 sites reasonable rates. I also recommend eating at the local Brewery it has the best food in town it across the Highway from Safeway. If your not aware Moab is the Jeep Capital of the World and during Jeep week there (around the Easter holiday) there's 30,000 to 40,000 Jeeps there and in the area. I alway's stay one week and it's never enough time.
  • We always dry camp 1 mile north of Arch View, which is on US-191 at the entrance to Canyon Lands NP. We use Arch View as a fuel and food stop daily, when off roading there. It is a very good campground. There is also an awesome state park off the road to Canyon Lands called Dead Horse Point SP. The rim walk at the park is spectacular. we really don't care for the RV parks in town, to busy for us and not readily accessible to the trail system.
  • We left there about 1 month ago and if you dont have a reservation at a park you may have trouble finding a spot. We found all campground to be full except for the one that is 6 miles north of town I think it was called Arch View. We were only there 3 days I talked to other campers and they told me they made reservations 3 months in advance.
  • It's been a few years since I've stayed there, so FWIW. There was a nice park on the south end of town.

Arches National Park is a must see. Colorado National Monument is east an hours drive toward Fruita, CO. La Salle mountains. Here is a good site for info.

You don't say when you are going. There are some local events; Melon Days in Green River, they every kind of Melon you can imagine. Palisade CO peaches, best I've had anywhere. Wineries there, too.

Driving: It is a two lane road across the desert south bound which falls into Moab at the Colorado River. Traffic is impatient. Continuing south it is up hill 25 or 30 miles with a few steep spots. If you go in summer it will test your cooling system and driving technique.

Have you been to Monument Valley? Continue South through Bluff, two RV campgrounds and cross the river at Mexican Hat, have lunch.dinner at the Swinging Grill. MV is hour or two to the west. If you go east there is 4 corners.

    Enjoy the drive!
  • If you are planning on taking I-15 through SLC, then take it south to Spanish Forks where you pick up US-6 east to I-70. Take I-70 east to US-191 and then south to Moab. When you head south to Sedona, continue on US-191 to US-160 at Mexican Waters, AZ and then west on US-160 to US-89. South on US-89 & US-89A to Sedona. All good and direct roads. We have traveled every inch of that route and it is very doable in any RV.

Personally I despise I-15 through SLC, but for your starting point, that is the best route. We usually cut down through Ely NV on US-93 then pick up US-50 east to Scipio and Salina UT, where we pick up I-70 and head east. Longer, but keeps me out of the SLC mess and IMO, is more scenic.
