New Class A for us

We are looking at a 2008 Tiffin Motorhome Allegro Bay Used, DIESEL, 38 ft., 2 a/c, 3 slideouts. This MH has a front diesel rather than a pusher. What are the pros/cons of the engine being in the front? Thanks for the info.

  • If they were great Tiffin would still be building them ?????????

The only advantage with the Fred was the fuel mileage. Same chassis as the gas( springs not air bags), noisier up front, less performance than the gas. A friend had one for a while and claimed 10 mpgs vs 8 mpgs for the Chevy gas. Some people liked them.

But with higher diesel price per gallon and more costly to service the little if any better fuel millage wont mean a thing to your wallet, not to mention the higher cost..

    ;)
  • We had a FRED for a while prior to our pusher. The difference between the two is amazing. The ride with a pusher is smoother with the air suspension and the noise level up front is only due to how loud you have the radio. My wife and I still comment about how nice it is to have a conversation without trying to talk over the engine noise. Additionally, when the fan kicks in on a FRED, it really is loud. Just thought I would add my two cents.
  • The FRED is a gasser chassis with a diesel engine. Juice brakes, leaf springs, noisy diesel up front with you and the missus...

The advantage of a DP isn't the diesel engine, it is the air ride and the fact that the engine is somewhere "way back there..."

What you are looking at is called a Tiffin FRED so here are some recent posts.. Basically you are getting a gas class A with the only difference... a diesel engine.
  • Another pro is that you will get better fuel economy vs. having the gas engine.

If I'm not mistaken, you may have a gas type chassis vs. the air bag chassis of a rear engine diesel. Others may chime in to verify about the chassis.

    Good luck,
    MM.
  • Diesel engine in the rear - little noise. Same engine in the front - noise. Everything else being equal the choice seems easy.
  • Another question with the front diesel... How much difference is there in the basement storage between the front diesel and a pusher?

    Thanks,
    John
  • Really it is just heat and noise. Possibly it may be slightly more difficult to work on. If you drive it and a are ok with the noise level then it should be fine. The only other thing that is different is the rear overhang may be longer than a DP.
