New England Trip

In the past 10 years we've been towing, only once did we leave the tow vehicle home, and during that trip we kicked ourselves for leaving it home. I thought maybe our New England trip would be the exception, but we towed it anyway. Sure enough, we were glad we had it.

We have concluded, there is almost never a reason to leave the tow vehicle home. The benefits of bringing it has always outweighed the benefit of leaving it home. I think the only exception would be a trip to Alaska because that trip would be in a constant forward-moving direction. It would also be easier to utilize ferries.

We found some sea captains mansions that had been converted into interesting museums in Searsport, Maine many years ago. May be bread and breakfast places by now. Mystic Seaport is worth spending a 1/2 day if you have an interest in olde tyme seafaring lore like I am. Pulling a toad in east coast cities is probably more bother than it's worth. Boston had no RV parking in the city but had a number of options for shuttle and tour buses, walking tours, etc. Best to do some research before your RV tour.

Not mentioned is the White Mtns of NH very nice area and NF CG's. Cape Brenton in Nova Scotia is another place I would not miss along with Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick.

Thanks everyone! We went and are back. Took bikes, no car. Used the bikes just once. Worth the effort for the East Bay Bike Path in RI. On great advice from NJ info center staff member, we stayed at Liberty Harbor RV park. A sort walk to the ferry, hook ups, and 24 hr "parking" in a secure site for $95!!! High for a CG but not for,basically, IN NYC. For Boston, we parked at Abington station ($4 all day) and took train in from there. Very easy-and we're newbies!! Unable to park anywhere in Salem. Even the train station parking was closed except to Mass. residents due to construction. We just decided to leave. All our other travels were easy in our 29 footer. New England was beautiful as expected. As PA doesn't charge entry fees for State Park we were shocked at the fees charged just to get in/park in other states. For Acadia NP we stayed at one of the 2 parks that is a stop on the Island Explorer Shuttle. Awesome way to get around and see the park!

Maine has a great set of visitor guides, its too late to get them mailed now , but do stop at the visitor center and pick one up, A few favorites not so well known

There are little fishing towns scattered along the coast, Bar Harbor being the most well know, but numerous others as well, and the food in the pier areas is wonderful.

There are a lot of state parks with camping that are out of the way.

We spent two weeks driving the big loop around Nova Scotia...boondocking the whole time (it was early May). Spending the nights at some lighthouses (might not happen on season) and down some carefully selected roads to the ocean. We didn't need bikes and had no toad (25 foot class c).

I am thinking you can leave the bikes at home. WE did not bring ours for this.

We tow our car and our bicycles are on the motorhome so we have the option of bikes or car. We almost always use the car.

Don't forget that Vermont is one of the New England states too.

Leave the bikes at home. Get out your good Sam directory and read about all the interesting places as Kerriakeroo mentioned. State parks in MA are booked many months ahead of time and they will not let you in without a reservation. Most of the private campgrounds are excellent in CT and MA and you should probably plan ahead on what you want to see. You could also take a chance and drive into a campground and hopefully they are not full, but at this time of year in Cape Cod they are full up especially weekends.

Thank you kerriakeRoo and buta4 ! We would like to take a month and explore. There is so much to see. Would like to narrow down to " must sees", best campgrounds, and avoid at all costs ??. We are relatively new RVers too.

Unless you're familiar with Boston streets ... do not attempt to drive in the City if you can help it. Scan for a campground with sea,rail,bus transportation available nearby. Commuter Rail is handy.

There are ferries from some campgrounds as well as shuttle buses and Commuter Rail.

Wampatuck State Park and drive to ferry lot in Hingham is a convenient base.
