new vw doubleback campervan sold in UK

I just read about this incredible VW campervan made in the UK with an amazing rear slide out and pop top....why is something like this, so innovative, not sold in North America. If I wanted one, is there anyway to order a VW T5 transporter van with this amazing slideout and have it shipped to the US or Canada? Are there too many restrictions where this would be impossible?

Thanks for helping me with this question...Lloyd
  • why don't they make the SS Ideal anymore? didn't it sell? was there a problem with it besides the fact that it wasn't an efficient use of space?
  • Mowog, I think you nailed it. Yep, here is the SS Ideal again that I just dropped in the Promaster Slide discussion.

  • Look up Roadtrek Ideal. Nice idea, but sometime simpler is better. A slide out makes the interior very cramped unless it is extended.

My wife and looked at the Ideal 5 years ago. I suppose the room of the RS (with slide out open) in the size of the SS seemed like a good idea. But the extra weight in the short wheelbase SS really decreased capacity, and the retracted slide out decreased interior space.

I think that when you take something, and try to make it do more than it was meant to do, you end up with less than when you started.

You would need VW to provide documentation certifying the vehicle meets US/Canada Safety and Emission standards.
    Good luck with that!
  • Market demand? Not very stealth when parked and used. Requires considerable setup to use the campervan features. How functional is the van before "unfolding"? Neat clever design, but why?
