Pipework under hot water heater 2014 Bounder

On a recent road trip I noticed a constant drip in the compartment below the hot water heater. This is where the drain valves are for the water heater. The is a copper flow control T flow control valve that was dripping. When I got back home I took the T valve off and the connection on the one side just broke apart.
I had to go to a plumbing supply warehouse to get a new valve (as Lowes, Home Depot carry nothing like a T shut off valve).
As it is a pressure fitting I used the appropriate tape, replaced it rehooked all back up but am still getting a small drip from the very same side. It feels like if I overtighten the 1/2 inch copper pipe I can crack the new valve.
Anyone experience this?
Thanks!
