"Smart Wheel" Question

We have a 2001 Holiday Rambler Imperial with a "Smart Wheel" steering column. Sometimes when I turn the wheel the windshield wipers will turn on. Has anyone had to solve this problem? Any suggestions?
  • The earlier smart wheels use a couple slip-rings riding on buttons to transmit the appropriate signals to the brain. Over time the slip rings and buttons get dirty and need to be cleaned. I used a pencil eraser to burnish the slip sings and buttons than cleaned them with a spray contact cleaner. Seems to have solved my erratic behavior...at least for now.
  • The 2001 may be an earlier version. On our 2005 Diplomat I used a jeweler's screwdriver to remove all of the screws holding the plastic smartwheel assembly (all from the bottom).

There are four wires that carry the signals for the different controls. One of yours may have a short or be broken. I had to repair mine. After the repair, the cruise control and wiper functions were restored.
