Well at 81 I had very few choices as a youngster in Appalachia. No indoor plumbing, outhouse, wood stove for both heat and cooking, farmed with horses, no car, no phone, no electric, no TV, kerosene lamps for light, hunted or raised all we had to eat. We had nothing so at the ripe old age of 15 after not going to school for 2 years I walked out of there and have done pretty well since. But there will always be those holier than thou folks that will look down their nose at me because I miss spell a word now and then. So be it. I'll still help with your refrigerator if I can, no problem.
