Well our Fleetwood MH is turning 2 this July. Immediately after buying I noticed some minor rust spots in the bay area and underneath ( bay framework). I just let it go the first year. Well I decided to tackle it this year to touch things up. My fix is using Black Star rust converter on the rusted areas and paint with an oil based paint. Did the prep yesterday ( scraping and brushing rusted spots). I was surprised (not) to find areas were the paint would peel off from the rusted spot another few inches to bare metal. Something was seriously wrong with the factory paint job. It wasn't even stuck to the metal.So I peeled off what would come off and it too will be painted. What a joke, spend that kind of money for a careless paint job. So I'll do it right. I'll also spray with the rust converter under the coach along the outside rails ( bay frame work) and any other area that has rust underneath within reach. I plan to use a garden sprayer to get a better reach. It won't need to be painted as the converter isn't suppose to rust again and it turns a blackish color.So I have a three to four day job ahead of me. Did I say I HATE rust. What is amazing is the chassis frame has no rust at all - Freightliner.

While I have not used this myself, I hear nothing but good things about POR-15 for stopping and treating rust.

You might want to paint over the converter...use primer and then good paint.

I've had the area with converter on it rust again. I now you the converter, primer and then a couple of coats of paint. No more rust.

While I have not used this myself, I hear nothing but good things about POR-15 for stopping and treating rust.

No - I said it was rusting when we bought it. It was buildt in May 2013 and driven 3 hours to Michigan. Snow was gone by then. Fleetwoods painting of there structural framing sucks. The paint wasn't even adhered to the metal in many places. You could pull spots off like removing dead skin from a sunburn. Clean metal under it in areas- no rust. It must not have been prepped properly.

This will be a yearly maintenance procedure by the looks of it. As that link Executive posted - they painted ours too over already rusted framework in other ares. Now we have to wait for it to appear every year and address it.

This will definitely give me a reason to consider other manufactures for a future MH. Did I say I hate rust!!

I guess you haven't thought of contacting Fleetwood with your issue and getting them to make it good. Clearly their paint process failed and you should not have to bear the cost of their lack of QC. At the very least they should provide you with the cost of materials if you don't want them to do the work (I can understand your not wanting to trust them or make the drive to their factory).
