Sequoia NP - Best Route into Park?

Hi, I'm new here. I have a Roadtrek which is 22' long. Which is the best route into the park 198 or 180. We're coming in from Tucson, AZ.

Also any best route from Tucson and recommended campgrounds along the route? We don't want any long driving days.

Much appreciated. Bob
  • The 180 is easiest but we once took the 198 23 years ago in our first MH. It was a 19' SunRay built on a Toyota chassis with a 1.8 Ltr engine.Completely under powered.I think you should have no trouble but check for construction. We were there 3 years ago and climbed Moro Rock(recommended). It over looks Highway 198 and the line of cars stretched down the mountain waiting for the construction.
  • We have a 22' Airstream Interstate and have yet to find a road or campground we could not navigate easily.
  • We traveled Sequoia NP in our 24 ft. extended body Sprinter. The roads are easily negotiable.
  • In a CAR a few years ago we entered coming from Yosemite on 180 and left on 198 to go on to Death Valley. I mention both roads because that is just the way I travel, I want to see what is on the way, along as many routes as possible, so I love when I can get there one way and get out another. There were a lot of switchbacks and winding roads, so a 22' B will be different than a 19', which will be different from our Dodge Avenger rental car at the time. By the way, the scenery on the road down Kings Canyon just to the north was easily well worth the time. But again, a little different for the 22' B. As you know I'm sure, Grant Grove is a must-see. Good Luck!
