South Carolina for April: Charleston or Myrtle Beach?

Husband wants me to pick where we will stay for the month of April: Charleston or Myrtle Beach. What would you suggest and what is there to do there?

We are also mid 30s (okay, I'm late 30s and wife is close enough to 30; that averages mid 30s). Check out Broadway at the Beach http://www.broadwayatthebeach.com/ The beginning of April I'm sure they will have a lot open. Margaritaville is there. Lot of boardwalk and more beach. The Bowary http://www.thebowery.com/ Mini golf, zip line, etc. Myrtle Beach Speedway (if anything is going on there then).

Charleston has a great downtown worth visiting. I can probably do a couple of days there. There is a naval ship and submarine tour. Carriage ride down Rainbow Row. Slave trade (old outdoor flea market surrounded by lots of little shops and restaurants / bars). Haunted jail tour, and the like.

That's pretty much both in a nutshell. If it was me, I'd probably stay in Myrtle Beach (MB life is in the north end), and take the 2 hour journey early in the morning to Charleston and plan to stay the entire day coming back late. Might be worth a second day journey later in the trip if you missed stuff.

For us it would be Charleston, SC--much quieter, historic, still great food and interesting places to see.

Myrtle Beach is fine if all you want to do is eat, shop, play golf or go walk on the beach. But in April...that might be in the middle of Spring Break...wouldn't go near that place on a bet.

My mother lived outside Charleston for 10 years, so I have been to both many times. As most stated, it depends on your interests. Myrtle Beach is a resort town with a ton to do especially on the north end. Further south are more beachy campgrounds without all of the same boardwalk style excitement.

Charleston has some awesome history. Do you have kids? What ages? There is no reason you can't do both. They are only a couple of hours apart. I have day-tripped one from the other. It is a bit of a ride, and I would enjoy at least 2 says in Charleston, but I personally prefer to stay in Myrtle Beach, but we prefer more entertainment than history.

Either way, I can recommend a lot in either place. Either of you golfers?

I'm currently sitting in Myrtle Beach and that would be my choice. We can drive down to Charleston within a couple hours and tour the sites; many stay over for a few days.

Depends on what you want to do. Relax? Go to Myrtle, and stay on the beach.
Sight see? You need to go to Charleston. A day trip may be nice. But you need more time to get any thing done in Charleston, There is just too much to see for part of one day. You can spend a week there and not see it all. From the ships, forts, Battery, Rainbow Way, Carriage rides, Boat rides, Plantations, and Ghost Walks.

Not to mention the restaurants.

BTW. James Island CG has shuttles to downtown, and is a great CG.

Stay at Myrtle Beach, take a day to go to Charleston. Take a carriage tour. Done.

It really depends on what you like most. As noted, Charleston has a lot of history...the Battery, historic homes, carriage tours, Patriot's Point with retired Navy ships (including the Yorktown), market, great seafood and a really nice RV park at James Island County Park.

Myrtle Beach is more than just the beach and golf. Great live shows, shopping, Brookgreen Gardens, great seafood, really nice wide beaches. We also go to Ocean Lakes most every April and there are no crowds and the traffic is fairly light. Charleston is a day trip from Ocean Lakes.

Split the time....half at MB and half at Charleston. That is why you have wheels on that thing :B

Also ... in MB there are several state parks (Myrtle Beach SP & Huntington Beach SP), Brookgreen Gardens, Ripley's Aquarium, many show venues (Alabama Theater, Palace Theater, etc)....not just beaches & golf........
Ocean Lakes is an excellent campground... been there 4 or 5 years running....
and Charleston is an easy round trip day adventure........

We visit Myrtle Beach SC in April every year. We stay at Ocean Lakes. Great friendly place. Last year we went to Charleston for one overnight. That was fun. Very historic but we would rather stay in Myrtle Beach. You can easily go anywhere and do anything without large crowds that time of year. Temps 65-75.
