spare tire

We had a 1988 Wallard on a Ford E-350 that we bought new and used it until we replaced it with a new Itasca 24V on a Ford E-350, 2002. We replaced it with a 2015 Itasca 27Q this past Aug.
We had maybe 6 flat tires over the years with the Mallard.
With the 24V Itasca we never had a flat so never used the spare.
The 27Q came without a spare. What are the odds of ever needing a spare foe the 27Q ?

Ah, a beautiful Sunday morning, boondocking at an out of the way park, getting ready to leave. But wait!!! I have a flat!!! What to do???
Ah, but then I remember, I have a SPARE, and a BOTTLE JACK, and an ELECTRIC IMPACT WRENCH!!!
No problem, and I'm on my way!!!

LOL I thought at first you said a bottle of Jack.
Sounded like a plan call road side assistance
    get bottle of Jack
    spend one more night
    GREAT PLAN

  • As the ad says "WHATS IN YOUR WALLET" DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT:R"
  • I wouldn't be without a spare tire on anything except my bicycle. Why go through the headache of having to worry about finding a tire while you are on the side of the interstate with a blow out? It'd be a lot cheaper now to buy the tire than to have to pay big bucks for one from a road side tire service.

A blowout can happen at any time for any reason. We didn't have a blowout with our first two RVs over the course of 5 years. We've had one blowout with our Motorhome (just last week) 1 month shy of 7 years. It looks like I ran over something on the road that caused the blow out. I am very careful with monitoring tire pressure and always check the tire temperature whenever I stop. I still had a blowout.

    Easy...
If you have a flat, the odds are 100% that you'll need a spare.
If you don't have a flat, the odds are 50%-50%. You'll either have a flat, or you won't.
If you have a flat, and don't have a spare, you'll be at the mercy of whatever tire the road service brings you, and whatever they want to charge you.
However, your motor home, your family, your choice.

  • if you have a roof rack? buy a tire only put in a vinyl bag and your good to go, you,ll always have the tire for a shop to install.
  • The morning after I finished the last 300 mile leg home, I checked the tire pressures. One inside dually read zero. I limped to my dealer where I bought my 'C' and had both tires on that side replaced. I had no idea when the tire ran over that huge nail. Then I had a TPMS monitoring system installed. I also carry a mounted spare in the storage area. To make room, I removed the entire set of metric tools I was carrying around for some unknown reason.
I figure that heavy duty tow trucks can lift my 'C' off the ground, but the chances of them having a replacement tire are pretty slim.

Odds are you will need it when you have a flat! :W

I would never travel in my MH without a spare on board at all times.
  • I have a 2014 Itasca 25B. It came with General Grabber tires. I have had two events that would have developed into spare requirements if I hadn't had a TireMinder to tell me the tires were loosing air when I still had enough air to get to a shop. Both of those events occurred on a month long trip up and back from FL to MA. I carry a spare for peace of mind, same reason I have the TireMinder.
