@RVSKIER
The trail is built on an old railroad right of way called the Black Fork Grade. It was a marvel of engineering when it was built in the late 1800's. Parts of the grade approach 3.75%. a 3.75% grade means the roadbed raises 3.75 feet for every 100 feet it advances.I believe modern railroads keep their grades to less than 2%.
When the railroad was in operation "helper" engines where needed to push trains up the grade through the Blackwater River Canyon. As many as 15 extra engines would be used at a time.
What this all comes down to is that if you're on a bike it's a great workout going up the grade and a blast coasting back.
Here's a panoramic photo I took of the canyon. You can just see the trail running along the opposite side of the canyon. Click on the pic to see a full sized version.
@QJane
Agree 100%.
I've never slept in a RV before, just tent camped. The Penthouse top is the best of both worlds. It has the vibe of tent camping with all the convenience of a RV. I just love it.
