The old NEW vs USED debate

Hey Everyone!

So I know this topic has been discussed like crazy and have been reading non-stop. I'm looking to purchase our first motorhome and am just looking for any advice from the more experienced here.

We have are deciding between 2 identical Georgetown units - 1 new and 1 used with 28,000 miles on it. everything else is the same including the 2016 model year.

MSRP is 146k on this unit but are able to purchase this for 95k brand new and 85k used.

I get the depreciation and warranty thing but at what point (in your opinion) but where do you draw the line? Is 10k price difference enough to offset the 28,000 miles and spent warranty? What would you do? What am I not thinking about? TIA

If by some magic you can know the RV will keep you happy for a decade or more then get the new one.
If there is any chance you will change your mind in a few years go used.

I always find it funny that despite asking very specific questions about a very specific model and year, folks still offer the recommendation to buy a unit like they have that is completely different in every way including price.

Why not offer a different opinion, of a much better coach for the same money. We had a low end coach, never again.
JMHO but when he tries to turn the Georgetown around next year, he won't get half of the price he paid.
The Newmar and other higher end coaches are pretty stable in value in that price range.

I think your point is relevant when people are asking generally what to buy. When an OP asks specific questions about a specific unit they have made up their mind they want, it's sort of odd to throw out something completely irrelevant to the conversation.

Simply a matter of opinion isn't it? I found out a long time ago never buy the low end of any thing.
Our coach in coming up 17 years old, still operates like new, simply because it was built to last. and any of the higher end coaches will too.
Our coach and the two I referred to will sleep 4 and with a little arrangement will sleep 6. IMHO the bunk arrangement simply takes up living space, or becomes a bad storage compartment.

Then I guess anyone in the market for an entry level MH should stop thinking on their own and let you pick for them. You might be busy though cuz they sure do sell a lot of em. I appreciate you like what you have but believe it or not, other people like different things and should be able to buy what they want, not what you want them to.

Ya, lets see, new F150, or a 12 yo Bently that is built much better but I could never justify new.

shop Bently

At some point in everyones opinion, there is a line that says "too dated" or "too old" That line is different for everyone. I always figure I have no business looking at something used that I couldn't afford new. I sometimes go used just because it is a better value.

For the price of the new one, you can buy a much better coach used like this , No emissions to contend with and much more room and a quality build on a bullet proof frame and engine.
He said he could get the new one for $95, thats a ways a way from $149.

Lots of good well cared for used M/H in that price range too. try This one
IMHO Doesn't require much of a M/H to be better than a GeorgeTown.

Except when it's 11 years older, diesel, larger, does not have bunk beds or 2 baths. Or in other words - completely different than what the OP is looking at.

Since depreciation per mile is the highest cost of RV ownership, we always go for used and also for a high quality unit, that fits our budget. This requires going back some years and if there is a line to be drawn, then it's going to be something over 10yrs. The last two we bought were each, 9yrs old and both were like new, with low miles.
Having said all this, I'm thinking that you should shock them with an offer on the used coach of your choice and you might just be surprised with what you might get it for.

Just make sure you can live with the floor plan before you buy a new coach. If you can't, you'll be stuck taking a big hit on the trade-in or hanging onto it for a few years.

I'd find the same model in the 2014-15 year range and buy the best one.
