This post is one part story and one part question. Few weeks ago we were returning from the campground when I hit a piece of metal on the interstate. Rear passenger duals both blew. Exhaust fell out, wheel well tore up, floor, insulation, propane lines, electric wires to furnace, furnace also received minor damage. I replaced tires while on side of road by jacking her up and taking to local Walmart. No it wasn't safe but I was mad because tow companies didn't answer phone. Moral of story carry cribbing and couple jacks. Called progressive next day. No problems there. They've already paid me for tires and exhaust. I took to local General rv for estimates. They haven't looked at it in two weeks but they say it's really busy and they promise to get to it as soon as they can. I'm ok with that the place seems busy. The insurance adjuster gave me a friendly warning that it may take a couple of months to repair so I guess that's it for 2015. Wasn't a bad year until this. Now part 2 or the question. What on earth would we do if this motorhome was across the country? What would we do if we are full timers? I just wanna know because we have discussed going out on the road in 10 years when I retire. Ok I guess that's a few questions haha. Are 5ers going to give you more options when damage occurs? Thanks all.

Have a company like CoachNet tow it or load it on a flat bed truck and take it to a reputable repair shop. Get on your tow vehicle and drive home and wait for repairs. Now if you are a full timer that does put you in a hard spot. Some insurance companies will pay for you to stay in a hotel, but I am not sure what some have.

I had a really funny drawn out post in response to this... but decided against it. Simply put, it's sort of obvious. If you have a 5er or a Class A.. if it's tore up you'd probably have to stay with friends or in a hotel/motel/apartment or something. If your tow rig or toad survived the accident then you'd still have transportation.

Lots of available money helps. Save all you can for the next ten years.

You could've used the funny response! It's ok it's almost funny now. We have so many misadventures as it is my coworkers start humming national lampoons vacation theme.

Talk to an insurance company about ALL of your concerns. There are various policies that can be written to take care of trip interruption, etc.
The only way you will get an answer to your questions is to talk with an expert. You may need to change to a difference insurance company and it may cost you a little more, but it is better to have all of your issues taken care of before the need arises, than trying to deal with it when it is too late.

Stuff happens, There are no guarantees in life. This applies to RVing to.
I broke down close to home and it took 23 days for the shop to find the hydraulic pump. Not their fault.

Had I been on the road further I would have had the choice to fly home or stay with the coach. Full time I would have to stay at the shop.

Update..... After about 6 weeks at shop they call and parts are arriving. Apparently after service manager quit or got fired they forgot about me. We also discussed upcoming freezing weather and they would like to winterize for 99$. I think they can kiss my white .....foot. I left message with insurance adjuster that I might file a separate claim if water lines break. I'm thinking about going up tomorrow and driving it home. :( this is getting demoralizing.

We traveled to the HWH factory in Moscow, Iowa in July of 2014. They removed the hydraulic leveling system in our coach and replaced it with an air leveling system. I had issues with leaking jacks and they were obsolete. Stayed one night with electric outside of shop. The next day pulled onto a lift two stories up, hooked up to 50 amp, ran a/c, had tv signal...stayed in coach for three nights. We watched the night shift work in shop, had access to showers in plant. During the day did some sightseeing. Worked out great!

OHIO me to and I use the rv shop just out side deerfield ohio mom,pop shop do great work and no bull %%%%. best place in a hundred miles. called camper care I think.

I don't see this mentioned yet, but if you are a full timer then you get full timers insurance. I'm not a full timer and I don't have that type of coverage, but my understanding is full timers insurance is a lot like a homeowners insurance policy. If your motorhome is in the shop because of a covered accident, then they pay to put you up in a hotel until it's done. Full timer coverage also provides you with liability protection similar to a homeowners policy in that you are covered for things not related to the motorhome.

Some of my friends refer to my blog as "Perils of Paul" we are among the "home is where we park it" crowd so we depend on access to the coach for everyday living. In our experience most service places have facilities for full timers or for those far from their home base to hook p and stay the night in the coach. We have even slept in the coach in service bays and once in a paint booth (not the best place for sure).

Also if you get to a service place that doesn't turn you down because "you didn't buy from us", they will generally work with you on getting you back on the road. As for the "didn't buy from us" places we make note and list them in the blog and on here. I could rant but will drop it there.

As a class A full-timer, I've spent plenty of nights at the dealer's shop. Some repair shops have full hookups outside the shop and will move you back out every evening. Some work on your coach while it is still hooked up. One shop in Tucson had the full hookup right outside the service shop and it was covered by a porch. The whole property was locked behind a chain linked fence. I would have to call security to get in our out in the evenings.

The point is, you wouldn't be the first full-time customer to come in without an alternative place to stay. This happens all the time and virtually every shop will suggest the most appropriate way to handle your situation.

Don't let that influence your thinking. You'll always find a way to solve every problem. If not, you can post to this forum and someone will figure it out.

I am also with Coach-net...have not had to use it ..but discovered that they pay their tow companies promptly..and they expect professionals...that is not true with some of the others...I dropped my previous when I found out they take their time paying their tow companies..and you get less than excellent service

I'm never done for a season with my motorhome it's my winter storm HQ's as needed. My accident, a runaway truck hit my motorhome. It happened in mid December when the Winnebago factory was down for Christmas and New Years. Most parts after shipping came in the third week of Jan. Our coach was finally fixed the second week of Feb. We drove home (WA.) in our toad, and left the coach in AZ. The repair shop and a paint shop took turns storing it for us. We drove back to AZ. in the toad to pick up the motorhome and resume RVing.
