Yes, the angle of attack for these can be difficult to navigate, especially if the hole thru the outside wheel is on the small side. Shorter stem lengths are available which could make it more accessible. Also try rotating the chuck from side to side to find if there is a sweet spot where things line up better.
I use a rigid dual chuck (no gage) I bought at NAPA that's about 8 inches long and gives something to grab onto and line up better.
