Tolls on toll roads

First, my rant:

Came into Orange County California yesterday and used the toll road to bypass traffic. (for those not familiar, traffic is horrendous 24/7)

Anyway, we pull up to the toll booth since it's "cash only" unless you have FasTrak and it's $14.00 for the first leg. $14.00 because I'm towing a car, so I'm considered a 5 axle vehicle. Now, if I stop just BEFORE the toll plaza and UNHOOK the car, it's only $9.00 for BOTH. Drive past the toll plaza and hook up again and I'm good to go, saving 36% !!! How does that make sense..:h Rant over...:M

My question is whether this is unique to California ONLY...:h or do other States do this as well....Thanks....Dennis

That can go both ways.

Many state parks charge an entrance fee even if you are staying at the campground.

If you unhook your car just before the front gate and drive both vehicles in, you will pay the entrance fee twice. If you pull in towing your car, you will only pay the entrance fee once. 😉

Principles?

What would you have done if a trooper pulled you over while you were hooking the toad back up, and gave you a ticket for scamming the toll booth?

Just curious...what "law" exactly do you think was broken...???? Cheating the government out of $5 that they were trying to cheat me out of?..:h....perhaps..but I checked California law books and found nothing relating to "scamming the toll booth"....just sayin....:W....Dennis

Careful now, I worked with a guy who the troopers were going to arrest if they caught him picking up pop cans in rest areas on the NYS Thruway. The troopers told him that the cans were the property of the Thruway Authority and he was stealing them. No kidding!! He took a break at the rest area and was picking up the cans for his church. It came to a end very quickly with the threat of arrest. It all depends on the toll road and who operates it. The NYS Thruway is not operated by the New York State Government, but is operated by the NYS Thruway Authority, a separate entity. But in reality, it is not separate. But it does have its own laws and contracts with the NY State Police to enforce them. Had a friend who retired from the state police who said that he was nothing but a revenue collector for the governor.

Pa Turnpike used to charge by axle and weight. Don't know if Indiana ever came out of the dark ages but it was cash only. I will drive from Rockwell Il to Indy to Wa Pa to I 64 to avoid tolls. They are just a double tax.

It would sure be an interesting court case if it were challenged. There is all kinds of legal reasoning on either side of the argument. Probably depend more on the judge than anything else.

What market could make such a sale! Only the Government can get away with that kind of math!
What I post is my 2 cents and nothing more. Please don't read anything into my post that's not there. If you disagree, that's OK.
Can't we all just get along?

Wait!! If apples are $1 a piece or in a bag 3 for $5 are you scamming the market by deliberately buying 3 of the single apples..???

I do that too. The first time I crossed our bridge that is 4 miles from my house, it cost me 14.00 with my car in tow. The next time, I unhooked a mile down the road and it was 10.00 (5.00 for each). A couple of months later when we were about to cross, I told my wife that I would pay the 14.00 because I didn't feel like stopping. When I got to the toll booth, they charged me 20.00. They RAISED the rate. Next time, I will unhook beforehand.

I think every Rver towing should stop at every toll booth, unhook drive thru, then hook back up. That will really show those State employees whose boss. :h

I usually stop on the OK pikes from Joplin to Ok City right before the tool booths to use the toidy. Once while we were stopped on the side a trooper came by and gave us the once over, possibly to see that we weren't unhooking.
