I have a friend that tows one with a gasser. He has no problems. The 4 of us have taken day trips with me sitting in the front passengers seat, it ride great and seems like it handles great also.
Not an Equinox, but our Terrain (sister to Equinox...only different sheet metal) tows perfectly. I did install a switch in place of the required fuse that has to be removed, but other than that, no other modifications were required. Turn the key to Acc, flip the switch, put the trans in neutral and off we go.
We now have about 20,000 miles towing and 90,000 miles total and the car has not had ANY problems what so ever.
On our second year with the Equinox LTZ. No problems. Like Ron, I added a switch in place of pulling the fuse. A $10 mod. Easy to tow..We bought the LTZ model as the LS does not offer the V6. The LTZ also comes with heated leather seats and the sunroof.....Dennis
I tow a Chevy Traverse or a Jeep when I travel, The Traverse tows as easily as the jeep and weighs 1000 lbs more. I owned a Pace with a V-10 prior to this coach and can tell you that Equinox will tow just fine for you.
