TPO roof repair

Hi all,

My TPO roof has a small nick in it from a tree branch. The outer layer of TPO has been punctured and pushed up but is still attached and can be pushed back down into the hole. I'm looking at using either clear Duck Brand or Gorilla Clear waterproof tape to make the repair.
If anyone has used either of these tapes on a TPO roof repair please advise your experience and/or recommendations.

Thanks,

Jim
  • Hi Jim,

We have TPO on our roof, too. When I started researching the installation and sealing of the roof when I was going to install our solar panels, I found out there are two (and possibly more) types of TPO out there.

One has a fleece backed surface to it. The other appears similar on both sides of the membrane. We have the former on ours and when applying a sealant (Dicor or other brand) to it, you need to apply a special primer to the surface just before applying the sealant. Dicor makes it, called Ultra Sealant Primer. Then you can apply any self leveling sealant to the primer.

If you have the TPO membrane that does not have the fleece backing then they recommend using the Ultra primer and their a special sealant called, Ultra Sealant.

I believe this procedure and the products has to do with the expansion/contraction/shrinking with age of the dis-similar materials. But, I was never able to verify this for sure.

Now as far as using Eterna-Bond on it, I don't know if it is recommended to apply the primer first as well, but according to their website, it has built-in primer and all that is needed is a clean surface.

Which method you need to use depends on the size of the hole. If its narrower, you could use self-leveling sealant. If its bigger, use Eterna-Bond.

    Good Luck,

    Tom
  • Don't make it harder than it is. Small piece of Ebond and roll it down thoroughly

I would use Dicor self leveling sealant or EternaBond.

    Agreed. Simple and easy repair.
  • Another vote for EternaBond. You will see when you put it on that it will stay forever and seal completely. Get a roll and keep it with you...it can be a real solution in many situations.
  • Thanks to all for the input. I know Eternabond tape and Dicor caulk are the recommended fixes, but my roof is not white, more like a biege/light tan color, and the small breach in the TPO is on the roof right where it "rolls" around down over the side. I really don't want to use white tape on it since it'll probably be visable from the ground, but nobody seems to have a tan Eternabond tape. The Dicor caulk apparently is made in a tan color that might match, if I can find it somewhere.
Because of the issue of trying to match the color, I thought the clear Duck or Gorilla tape would be a good solution if anyone had used it and had had a good result.

    Thanks,
    Jim
