Tolkien....In my opinion, Fishing Bridge is the best place to stay and the most centrally located. The park is designed basically in a big "Figure 8", with Fishing Bridge in the middle. With that said, Fishing Bridge is booked through September 21 when it closes, unless you already have reservations.
Coming from Oregon, your most likely place to stay will be Grizzly RV park at the west entrance. As noted, the road to Old Faithful from Grizzly is open, but you won't be able to go past Old Faithful and around to the lake or out the south entrance toward the Grand Tetons or Jackson. You can go around the "Figure 8" the other way (add 50 miles) and get to the south entrance.
What to see. As I said, the park is a large "Figure 8". There are things to see around both loops. If you plan to travel about 25% of the "Figure 8" each day, you'll have a good base for seeing everything in the park.
Ask around and you'll find some places where the animals come down in the evening to graze. On occasion, we would prepare our dinner, get our binoculars out and drive to one of the viewing points. Eat our dinner as the sun sets and watch the animals.
Have Fun! It's a great park.
