Be aware of anything that may be hiding under the couch you wish to replace; sometimes makers like to hide mechanical systems or outside storage compartments or whatever under couches, and you'll have to take any of that into account when figuring your replacement.
I like the way you think! BUT, I don't think that would fly. I have actually been contemplating a small 2'X 4' knock down bench that I could take with me along with a few hand woodworking tools--a rip saw, crosscut saw, dovetail saw, a few chisels, hand planes and some measuring and marking tools. I could either make legs for it or clamp it to a picnic table.
