OK, can hear fuel pump whirring when key is turned to first position, so think I can rule fuel flow is not the problem. Thinking more now has to do with transmission position. Tried jiggling wire harness that goes into side of xmission where shifter cable comes down. Might try jacking rear up to get off blocks later and see if maybe a slight roll of drive shaft it will get something back in sync if no other suggestions. If I do take off the blocks, cannot crawl back under without jacking up again, so not next option.
