Problem is that a lot of cities are more interested in spending for the shiny new stadium for the home team than having adequate police protection. I've had to store my rig in a yard that is a county away from Austin, but has a very good enforcement record... and rural Texas still is good ol' Texas, not the LA-wannabe city that Austin is becoming. Not even the meth-heads will try breaking open a gate with purple striped posts and well posted signs.
Austin is completely different. Not as bad as Chicago, but pretty much expect a police report ID for your insurance, and no more. I'm sure that is how it is in most big towns these days.
