When I bought a MH in1989 and sold it 5 years later and calculated my total loss I could have stayed in a 1st class motel room cheaper for every night I slept in my MH. Yup, still in an RV. Never learned anything.:B
My wife keeps telling me the same thing but it depends on what MH you buy and how often you use it. I bought a 1996 GBM in 2002 for $28k and put $12 into it for maintenance and repairs as stated above over 9 years for a total cost of $40k. I figured I spend about 90 days per year and travel about 8000 miles per year on average. If you were to figure $100/day for hotel at 90 days for 9 years that would be $81,000 in total. $50/day for food would be $40,500. 72,000 miles at 25 mpg for a Honda CRV or equivalent at $3.50/gal is $9,800 for gas. If you add in gifts for the family and friends and entertainment at $20/day times 90 days over 9 years that is another $16,200. That adds up to a total of $147,500 for small car and hotel travel. I have averaged $80/day x 90 days /year over 9 years for a total of $64,800 to travel in the MH. When I add $64,800 to the total cost of the MH $40,000 I get $104,800 for my MH vs $147,500 for hotel travel. So my conclusion is that if you by used and use your MH at least 3 months per year MH travel is cheaper. If you by new or with less usage per year hotels will be cheaper. At least this is what I tell my wife to justify my hobby.
