I think that based on the OP's stated use, he's in the market for a gas coach. A deisel coach can be a wonderful thing - usually the driver to this being a good choice is: you are running it full time (they don't do well just sitting around), you are towing (they can handle big loads), or you are wanting a very large RV. Gas rigs top out around 38 feet long.
I would say your priorities should be as follows: budget, driveability and then floorplan. You won't enjoy the RV if it's a financial burden, so set a budget and stick to it. An RV is a truck first, and a house second. Drive plenty of them. Of the most "driveable" ones, then select from those as to which floorplan works best for you. Don't choose floorplan first - you can easily end up with an RV that is overloaded on one of it's axles and is actually dangerous to use. Believe me when I tell you that some RV manufacturers could care less if they sell dangerous and unsafe vehicles.
Lastly, I would recommend sticking with a major brand with a reputation for quality. I'm partial to Tiffen and Winnebago. I would avoid the Hurricane as it's a pretty poor brand, as are the other cheap A's like the Thor Axis/Vegas.
If you are thinking about new, then I highly recommend something from Tiffen on the 24000 lb chassis. The new Fords have a 6 speed transmission and you can get Sumo springs installed from the factory. They also are chock full of features and seem to be bolted together pretty well. I have a 32SA on order - it's 34 ft long, but they have 2 shorter models.
If you end up with a used rig, be very cautious of rigs with long rear overhangs - this pretty much ensures poor handling characteristics. You want a wheelbase to overall length ration greater than 50%. The higher the better.
Good luck in your search!
