What size genny??

if we want a small genny for our trailer just to run some lights, tv at night when we stop while traveling (NO A/C or MICROWAVE) what would be a good size, WATTS..... would a 1000 watt one be ok or a little bigger?
  • A small one like this would handle minimal loads in some rigs. A 1000 or 1250 would also work.

Ive got the 2KW sized Honda. Glad I did. Ive used it then power at home here went out in winter. It will easily run my Mr. Coffee and my SAT receiver and my 54" TV. What more do I need till the power company gets things fixed....AND....running all of that will got for MORE than 8 hours on a small tank of fuel.
  • A 1000 watt Honda or Yamaha would be my choice. Light (30 pounds or so) and quiet. You would be able to hear the TV. For not much more you could get a 2000 watt and it would run the microwave. It is much heavier though, about 50 pounds.

You pull a trailer behind your MH?

He did not say that he has a motorhome. So, I assume a TT since the OP called it a trailer and not a 5th wheel.
  • Well,

Whatever size/kind you get, do yourself, and all your present and future camping neighbors a very large favor, GET A QUIET ONE! Honda makes just about the quietest ones on the planet. And, they charge for that too. Because they're about the most expensive ones too, size for size, watt for watt. Get a nice heavy duty lock and cable too. They, the generator/inverters have a tendency to grow little generator legs once in a while. Good luck.

  • I had a honda EU1000i that worked fine for about a year or so. Then the computer board went out and it was very expensive to repair. I ended up selling it not running. Then, I bought a 2000 watt honeywell, looks just like the honda and is pretty quiet. I paid $350 for it, and it has been working for several years nearly trouble free. I would buy it again, half the price of a honda for the same job.
  • for lights and TV for a little while at night

you don't need a generator, just get another battery and a small 300~400 watt Inverter
and rewire the power circuit to the Tow Vehicle to the Trailer, to supply a good charge for the batteries while driving

now if you intend to dry camp in forest campgrounds
having a generator is a good idea
