Wheels and Tires for 1982 Winnebago Warrior (Chevy Chassis)

I have a 1982 Winnebego Warrior C Class motorhome, Chevy chassis with the 350. It's about 21 feet or so.

I am looking around and since the tires are 8.75XR16.5, there are only about 2-3 tires to choose from. Namely, the Firestone HT Transforce.

I never really use this rv except just as a spare room around the house, and as a emergency motorhome in case we need to bugout due to some type of evacuation, so I don't want to spend more than I have to on tires.

I am curious what is a good cheap wheel from the junk yard, so I can save money and have more tires avilable on the used tire market.

I heard the GM dually wheels will fit, and some people went down to a 16" wheel.

Mine is single wheels in the back, not dually. My wheels are 8 lug, 165x6.75
  • Hey Winny,

Do not do anything rash until you get front and rear weights at a local truck scale. If you put tires on that cannot handle the load, it make make for a very short last trip.

My coach had 16.5 rims and I have finally changed to 16. It is nice to be able to buy tires you like.

One of our members, named CapriRacer, has Barry's Tire Tech, and a special page called 16.5" Tires. You'll see that the very popular LT225/75R16E tire, that most of our Class C's with dual rear tires use, is a great replacement for your 8.75R16.5 tires. If you want cheap, you can get those 225's for $100, maybe less.

OK Wheels! You need to match Number of Holes, Hole Spacing (bolt circle) and how the wheels are "piloted" meaning on the center hole or on the bolts.

The "Offset" information on Barry's refers mostly to dual rear wheels, where Offset relates to the required space between dual sidewalls.

Still, you need to match Offset on single wheels, too. Lay the Wheels (or Wheels with inflated tires) on a flat surface facing the same way, and measure from Surface to the same Hole on both wheels. If they match you're good to go. Too much or too little Offset on the "New" wheels can lead to the tires rubbing on the inside or outside sidewalls.

Chavy/GMC "3/4" or "1-ton" pickup or van should be candidates. Wrecking yards use a service called "Hollander Interchange" to investigate What fits What.

I don't think you want dually wheels. My old Chevy pickup had the same tires and probably the same wheels that you have. I got some 16" wheels & tires off of a newer pickup that someone was parting out via craigslist.

So what years will work with my rig? Just get some GM 8 lug rims, 16 inch? Anything else I need to know or look for?
  • I would upgrade to 16 inch, you can find used 16 inch rims and sometimes with good tires in savage yards and craigslist.

If its not a dually than don't go dually, stay with single in back but get 14 ply if you can for more weight carrying.
