Reason 101? :h

http://www.usatoday.com/story/todayinthesky/2015/02/23/miami-glitch-aa-flies-customers-but-not-their...

An apparent "technical issue" with a baggage system at Miami International kept AA from loading any of its flights with checked luggage for about eight hours on Friday. During that time, the IBT writes "the airline let its flights depart sans bags, but did not notify passengers of the issue. Instead, most passengers discovered when they reached their destinations that their luggage hadn't."

For me it's just another toy. We still fly because many places we go the rv just can't get you there.

Why we own a mh. We know who slept in the bed last night and when we're driving down the highway and I feel like a fresh hot cup of coffee I start up the generator and ask DW to plug in the kuerig and in a minute and a half I'm enjoying my coffee as we continue down the highway.

We are in the same boat as a lot of the posters here. Flying is so much trouble unless you just have to be somewhere quick. Before 9-11-01, flying was fairly pleasant.

We take the car if we can't take the coach. Flying is for emergency's only.

My last couple of jobs required frequent flights. I would fly to a site on Monday, work Tuesday-Thursday, Fly home of Friday and spend the weekend writing reports and making reservations for the following week. I finally insisted that they let me drive if the work site was within 600 miles. I hated flying because it was difficult to change reservations if you finished early or went longer than anticipated. We had to get to the airport at least two hours prior to the flight in order to be somewhat sure that we wouldn't get delayed in security and miss our flight.

I traveled for a living for 6 solid years. Leaving Sunday evening and returning (if I was lucky) on Friday evening. Lots of good and bad experiences during that time including 3 emergency landings and 9/11.

I am much happier traveling in my coach than flying coach.

Flying? "Nevermore quoth the Raven, nevermore". After going through a bad air pocket drop on my first of three return trips from Asia in December of '68 and two from Europe, I never regained the enjoyment of flying and hearing my brother, who works for a big timeshare, talk about the bed bug problems in hotel/motel chains, I only travel by RV.

One of the main reasons I own a:
Motor Home
5'er
Tent Trailer
Van Converson

( to be politically correct :E)

is because of the time we were traveling with the very young grandkids
stopped at a fuelstop, then took them inside to Burger King.

The granddaughter said " Gma I have to go potty", and off they go
to the 30 person deep line.

I walk up to DW and whispered " Why are you waiting in this line, when you have your own private potty right outside?"

...All of this talk about how bad we hate flying, definitely shows some good reasons to own an RV. No argument there.

However, I'm not seeing how it makes or breaks the case necessarily, for owning a Motorhome over any other type of RV, like the subject of this thread suggests?

Everything bad discussed here about flying commercial, could be completely avoided by traveling in almost any kind of RV. It doesn't necessarily have to be a motorized RV. A TT, 5th wheel, or even a truck camper could accomplish the same thing (and would be much more cost effective in some cases).

willald, I believe that the only reason the term motorhome was used here is because the OP has a MH, and posted the thread here in the CLASS A MOTORHOMES section. As you suggested, the subject could apply to any sort of recreational vehicle - even a conversion van for that matter. The point being, would you rather fly or use your RV to get to your destination?

I've flown enough commercial flights to have made two emergency landings where I ended up being bussed to my final destination. Basically I hate commercial aviation but it is a necessary evil if you have to travel overseas.
That said, I loved flying in my private airplanes. There is nothing quite like flying over some of the National Parks and other beautiful areas of this country at low level vrs 35,000 feet. Being able to drop in to one of the hundreds of general aviation airports usually puts you very close to the sights and ultimate destinations of the area. It also takes an all day driving experience in an RV down to a few hours, weather permitting. From a cost standpoint, general aviation is about as expensive as a Class A RV and the fuel mileage for the airplane will be better. Naturally you are limited with the amount of baggage you can take with you. A combination of RV and airplane worked for us for several years. Now, except for overseas travel, we prefer longer trips in the RV.

Well, I don't own a MH but I bought my 5er for basically the same reason. As a truck driver I use to enjoy flying when on vacation. Have fond memories of flying as a youngster with my grandmother. Use to fly to St Louis so often the flight attendants knew my name and my drink. Since 9-11 I dread the airport. Flew once after 9-11 and after that mess, I won't fly again. I'm a large person so I bought a 2nd ticket so I'd not be jammed against the person next to me. That caused a stink although some airlines require it. Then on the return flight I got bumped to a 2nd carrier which made me a "one-way with no baggage" (carry on only) which earned me a pat down and extra screening. Now understand, I have a NSA security background check for Haz-Mat on my CDL. I have a NAS background check for firearms and I've had security clearances when I was in nuclear power and the military, but none of that mattered cause the airline created a situation that I had a one-way ticket.

Nope, the airlines screwed up and can't understand why they are going broke.

Same here. Prior to the enhanced security after 9/11, I flew a lot. Not after 9/11 though.

DW and I too were faced with no choice but having to have to fly one time since then. When we arrived at check-in, we had one bag to check and one carry on. They told me that my checked bag was 5 lbs over weight. Now I'm thinking, OK, it'll cost me an extra $10 or $15 and we'll be on our way. The counter person then told me that it would be an extra $50.00 for the 5 lbs! I even asked if I heard correctly. He replied, "Yes sir. Five-O, fifty-dollars". HOWEVER, he then explained that I could take the bag off to the side, off load the extra 5 lbs into our carry on, then then bring the bag back and check it in. I just stood for a moment or two, thinking that I may have mis-understood something. I then replied, "You do realize that both of these bags are going on the SAME plane and therefore, we did not reduce the weight at all?" He said, "Yes sir, but that's the rules".:S

I'm all for heightened and tightened security at airports and airlines, but that isn't what I'd observed. The security measures were cumbersome, yet not thorough enough to maintain good "security". Many of the agents seemed as if they weren't paying attention to what was going on. This last experience of mine was in 2007. Perhaps it has gotten better? Not according to what others have told me. Missing baggage, cancelled flights, late flights that cause passengers to miss their connecting flights, etc. Then add to that the attitude of the airlines which don't seem to give a darn if you're stranded.

Flying is not an issue for me, but I'm done with airports and airlines and the dim-wits that operate them!

DW still flies about once a year to see her brother and SIL out in Nevada. As for me, I'll have no part of it (unless it was an extreme emergency).

If I can't get there in the Dutch Star (or one of my vehicles in the off season) I'm not going.
