In the NYC region? Get on the Line at Carnigie's Today

I'm more of a Katz type of grrl(ticket please!) but there is no denying that Carnegie 's is easier to get to for most visitors. Gotta say the chicken matzoh soup is extra worthy and I 'll miss the convenience.

Another NYC institution gone into national wannabe chain lockstep...sniffles and straight up bawling.

NYC is on its way to becoming any town USA when it comes to eating:(
  • Well at least you can still get a worthy Beijing Duck, properly roasted. Or get Shawarma on lafa bread.

    True that!

When I was in my teens shawarma and gyro showed up on the scene in Midtown but a 2 cent plain and chocolate egg cream were still part of the local vernacular. Nowadays, I have to watch and direct how an egg cream is concocted so that what used to be common knowledge thru out the 5 boroughs is made properly. 'Course I can get gyros on most any corner now. As for Peking duck, as long as you're fine with removing the esophagus, it's easy enough to make your own. Or just get on a subway and hightail it to Flushing (*correction made* and you can tell that the boroughh is unknown territory for me:D), Queens, near the home of the Mets w/ no anatomy lesson required:B.

I suspect that on NYD, the man and I, will take a walk down to the Lower East Side, and load up on deli goods: bialys, bagels, pickles galore, pastrami for him and brisket for me. Err I sorta have a yen for a kasha knish too.....be still my not yet over cholesterol laden heart.

Sammy's, 2nd Ave, Stage, the 72nd Milk Deli, and Carnegie's are now history.

Can you still get Greek food?

Almost every Greek diner is gone from my neighborhood (West Side) and with it the daily special of pastitsio, LOL. Mostly they were victims of the ever increasing commercial rents suffered by shoemakers, Woolworth type stores and their replacements, the Dollar stores.

Yesterday, we walked from 72nd Street + B'way to the mid 90's stopping at every local food emporium needed. Noted that another diner had closed as well as a sidewalk cafe called "Mykeonos". Never fear though you can still get a "Greek fix" by wandering out to Astoria, Queens, via the N train and getting off at Ditmas Blvd. I'm partial to Taverna K but just follow your nose in that nabe and all will be good.
