Natural Cough Drops

Don't know if this is appropriate, but it is cooking.
Tried this recipe for natural cough drops. They are not hard to make at all, and they are very good.

I made some of these, and really like them. Had all the ingredients on hand.
If you try it, I found it works best if you use about 1/4 tsp when dropping the mixture on the parchment paper.

1 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 Tbsp honey
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/4 tsp ground cloves

Bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.
Stir regularly during simmer.
Remove from heat and let cool a few minutes
Should be thick, dark and syrupy.
Put parchment paper on cookie sheet.

Use spoon to put small dabs on parchment paper.
1/4 tsp worked best for me.
Cool 20 minutes and then cover with powdered sugar.
If they don't peel off the paper easily, put them in the cold.
Once they are cool enough, they will pop right off.

Make sure they are coated with powdered sugar on both sides.
Store in a small tin. I put parchment paper in the bottom of the tin, and also between the layers.

Use as cough drops or dissolve 2 or 3 in a cup of hot water and drink. If you add a shot of whiskey, you have an instant Hot Toddy.

Edit: Word of warning... keep them refrigerated with parchment paper between the layers. I had a small tin and put a few in my purse over Christmas. A little voice told me to put the tin in a baggie, which I did. Two days later, I went to get one out of my purse and couldn't get the top off the tin. Had to get DH to help. Well, they all ran together in a big sticky blob. Glad I listened to my little voice. I could have had a huge mess in my purse.
  • The candy made you salivate more an soothed a rough throat from a cold.
We sold one brand that the aroma was so strong, one would open up the sinuses of everybody in the store. I can't think of the name, right now.
My Aunt made cough medicine out of honey, white lightning or whiskey and lemon.
I didn't take any thank goodness.
Grand Ma made some from base of Sasfrass, or Root Beer and weeds and bark from the woods. It was remarkably like her Spring Tonic.
I remember the last dose. She too me and my four sibblings, at the time and pointed out which roots to dig an which plants to pick.
That stuff would clean out any bugs, in your system and you too. Likd to cramp me to death.
When we got sick, on the mountain, we didn't let on. It was Mama I've got a test a test to take today. I really don't want to miss history. I'm much better now, got to go. If we were sick we didn't let on, or if Mam and Grand Ma, knew, we hid. She did have some cures though.
  • Thanks for sharing, the old remedies work better than the modern stuff, a lot of the times...
  • Thanks for this post and the best part is they are gluten free, dairy free, and soy free so I can use them.

Buy a box at neighborhood store. My buddy and I would have them all eaten by the time we walked the 8 blocks home. They were like 'candy' :B

  • Thanks for posting. That reminds me of those "old-fashioned" candies with the powdered sugar.
