Can you Change a Winegard Trav'ler from Dish to DirecTV?

Hello, New to the RV world and this Site. Our new to us Fleetwood Turbo Bounder (2007) came with a newly installed Winegard SK-1000 Dish antenna. I would rather stay with our DirecTV provider and have investigated the idea of changing out the Interface Box, Slimeline dish and LNB on the SK-1000. Maybe even the interface Box might have a removable/re-programmable chip set that would look for the DirecTV satellite rather than the Dish satellites. In the near term I have a tri-pod & DirecTV dish for reception until I can sort out the rest of this more elegant solution. Thanks for any suggestions,
John
  • Thanks Bill and All that have commented. I think I'll advertise the SK-1000 and save up some cash for a SK-AWM3. In the interim I'll use the DirecTV Slimline antenna I got from my neighbors house (he had just changed providers and didn't want it on the roof)and a tripod to "get by". More than one way to get connected!!

  • The information you have is correct. You can change a SK-1000 to an SK-3003 but nothing else due to the smaller motor used in SK-1000. The SK-3000 can receive 101, 110 and 119 but not 99 or 103 where the HD programming is located.
You absolutely can sell your SK-1000 as it is in high demand especially if someone could save a good deal of money. The bases and the cabling for both unit are the same so it would only involve removing the antenna and cabling from the base and installing the new antenna on the existing base. You then take the brand new base you removed from the new SK-SWM3 and install that on the old SK-1000 and the new owner is all ready to go. You also need to change the controller inside the coach as the SWM controller is not compatible with the Dish controller but that's just a matter of unplugging one and plugging the other in.
  • So, additional info from "the web". It seems that while you can convert from SK-1000 (Dish / Bell TV) to roughly a SK-3003 (DirecTV Triple Feed)it doesn't get you to the SK-SWM3 (DirecTV Auto Multi-Sat) configuration I'm looking for. The SK-SWM3 uses a larger reflector (oval dish) and the mechanism isn't up to the task. Winegard Tech service was already closed for the day, so I'll visit with them in the morning. If I though the used SK-1000 (Dish Unit) would sell, I'd sell it and buy a new DirecTV unit.

Great source of info, thanks all

  • I ask the same question to our local RV shop and he told us it's not cheap to change out our Travelers from Dish to Direct. He said we are better off buying a new one.
  • Imho, If I understand your question? I would stay with the Dish satellite service?? Have had Dish for 14 yrs. I especially like their tech support.
  • Thanks Larry, I will contact Winegard soon and make the conversion. Not sure why the SD versus HD programming but with the somewhat dated flat panels in the MH, probably will be OK!! Thanks again,

  • I asked Winegard that question. Their response.....

Yes you can convert from DISH to DirecTV, however, when converting to DirecTV you will only be able to receive standard definition programming. To do this you will need to replace the dish bracket, feed arm assembly, and reflector. The part numbers you need for the conversion are RP-SK63 - $255.00 (dish bracket and feed arm) and the RP-SK33 - $69.99 (reflector). The total price for the conversion is $324.99 plus tax and shipping
