Car Stereo Accessory Wiring Connection?

It is time to replace the cheap car stereo in the "74" Airstream Tradewind I'm renovating. As this is a trailer and not a motorized vehicle, how do I hand the wiring of the accessory wire coming off of the head unit? I'm concerned about running the battery down. Any help would be appreciated!

  • I plan on wiring in a switch to cut the power when on battery. Currently I've been pulling the fuse from the fuse box but thats a pain.

My stereo (Pioneer) pulls quite a bit of power even with it turned off. Switch should solve the problem.

Keep in mind most modern car DVD stereo's have wiring that prevents DVD's from playing unless the vehicle is parked. Trailers do not have a parking brake. Some units you can simply ground the park brake wire and you're good to go. However, many units in the past few years will not work so easily to bypass the park check. On my pioneer I bought a small bypass chip off ebay and it works perfect.
  • Get a mini STSP switch from Radio Shack for the constant wire. That way you simply need to flip the switch. Of course you will have to reset the clock and station presets.
  • Connect it to the same battery you are wiring the power lead but install a switch to allow you to cut the memory power when your unit is in storage. A small panel mount switch will work if you have room to mount it. Something like this:
    Toggle Switch
  • The Yellow (Constant), and the Red (Accessory/keyed power) should be wired together. You will just need to turn the headunit off when not using it just like you would with any other RV-type stereo.
