CCleaner causing issues

I recently installed CCleaner on my older Toshiba laptop, running WinXP.and now when I open the program the computer shuts off and restarts. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the program to no avail. I've also checked for malware, but found none. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

It is basically a broom and dustpan.. It is also dangerous in the wrong hands. But it can clean out no longer needed files like hot-fix installers, and windows updates.. It can cleare internet history and cookies.. You have control over what it does.. It includes a tool box that can uninstall no longer needed programs and as I recall a registery cleaner (USE WITH EXTREME CAUTION).

The "C" in CCleaner means "Crap" it was designed and written to clean out the******that computers collect which fills up the hard drive so he could reclaim the space it had taken.. Works too.

But I do uncheck a few things (Like I do not normally want to toss my cookies which it does by default)

I've used CCleaner for years also without a problem. Try Malwarebytes to see if you have malware that is corrupting the CCleaner file. Another great, and free, program. Also I use Ad Aware and AVG Antivirus (free version) and have been able to remove anything that finds its way onto my hard drive.

CCleaner and other programs like it look for duplicated items in the windows Registry.

It also looks for 'temp files' created by installing programs or uninstalling programs that did not 'clean up after themselves'

Windows' own disk cleanup is generally good enough for most people to perform this task, however CCleaner has an option to make sure all browsing cache and data is really erased. (A moderately experianced computer guru or a really pissed off wife can find out everything you have been browsing to even after you click the IE or Windows native 'wipe / clear history' buttons.)

I have found similar programs VERY useful on my phone, as Droid system makes it a PITA to clear out useless data filling up my phone, and the CCleaner type programs are very effective.

Part of the reason is on a phone you have 16GB of phone storage available, 6+GB is usually already taken up for the operating system. Also pictures dump to the phone storage by default. On modern computers there is ample space and deleting some temp files is not paramount to what can be ran on the computer.

I run it from a zip file, so it doesn't have to be installed. Less mess that way, and since there isn't a need for it to constantly run, I make sure that is turned off.

It is well worth having.

Used CC for many years never had a problem sounds like he needs to de-install and do a clean download reinstall.

Also I do not let it run in background.

Did you have CC cleaner clean the registry? If so, that's most likely your issue. If you did a backup, you will have to restore the registry.
I use CC all the time, but leave the registry alone.
Try to live up to your dogs opinion of you.

As I understand the problem only happens when he tries to run CCleaner.

So the problem is with the CCleaner program

And as I said, I suspect a bad download.

I agree with those of you that favor the use of CCleaner. I use it before creating a backup image so if I need the image I don't get the ... well you know.

However I have never felt the need to clean the registry with anything. From all I've read it really doesn't make any difference to Windows 7 operation unless you take out something that Windows is fond of, but that's another story.

I'm still using an older version as I don't like the new flat interface nor do I need any of the new improvements. It ain't broke so I can't see trying to fix it.

no need for ccleaner period

Now on this I disagree.. C-Cleaner. The first C is "C**P" by the way,, Windows stores a lot of junk.. Old hot fixes,, Updates Temp files.. Cookies by the ton, Most of this is just junk, it will NEVER be accessed and there is absolutely no reason to keep it lying about.

Some of it may be a security issue (Some cookies) but generally not.

CCleaner is the easiest way to sweep out the trash as it were. Works great (usually)

Why the O/P is having issues I do not know but it sounds like a bad download caused a bad install

I use CCleaner often (not as often as a few security programs but often) I did however re-configure so it only takes out the trash I want taken out..

X3.

It is a good cleaner to run routinely, but not constantly.

I agree. I've run Ccleaner for years, also without issues. So, I was surprised to find a glitch now. BTW, I do turn off real time monitoring. I also have the program on my newer Toshiba laptop running W8.1 and it's OK there. I appreciate the input and if I discover anything new I'll post it here.
