Coax outlet for satellite

Turns out can't get the satellite dish to work through the factory cable installation on my 05 Cougar. (All works fine if I run the cable from the dish directly through a window to the satellite receiver.) Wondering - I could install a coax outlet on the rig just outside where the receiver is. It would require of course punching through the RV wall. Looks like there's room and it would be a short run. Anyone done this? Any other ideas welcome

Just did this over the weekend. In my case my 5th is equipped for satellite, but the connector is in the bedroom not the living room where I would like to have it.

    Added second satellite connection

I bought the outside fitting last year when I was in RV surplus country in Indiana. Need it for the bedroom though. Just need to get up the courage to drill the hole. In the meantime I've been using one of those flat cables for window entry (on the storage door, not a window).

Normal coax routing for a RV with a single COAX inlet on the outside:
Cable runs to a switch.. If you have a wall plate with 12 volt outlet, switch, led and antenna connection the 2nd cable on the rear (Viewed from rear with 12 volt outlet at top) is USUALLY this cable.. If you wish to use it for Satellite, you will have to REMOVE it from the switch plate and extend it to the Sat Receiver,, TV out from Sat receiver goes back to this port on the switch by the way.

Better option in my opinion is to run a couple lengths of RG-6, Good quality low-loss RG-6 (not cheap stuff) one from a inlet you added and the other from the sat receiver to the cable inlet on the RV (NOTE: in many cases you will coil the cable in a compartment near the inlet and hook it in during set up).

WHY: Well, often the cable used in the RV from the factory is lowest bidder RG-59, Top quality 59 is about the same as bargain basement 6,, But average is 4 times the loss of average (Source Belden Cables). So you can imagine the difference between cheap 59 and quality 6.

And the distance from the inlet to the receiver can be much longer than you think as well. On my RV (a between 37 and 38 feet long that cable run is over 50 feet, which equals over 200 feet of RG-6 and 300 is the limit.

Which is why I ran rg-6
  • I installed a separate coax and fittings for my satellite system, since there are times when I want to hook up to both the dish and a campsite cable system.
  • I did the same mod on the inside of the trailer and it works fine. Just takes some ability to do a bit of rewiring.
  • I did a slight modification to the cable/antenna outlet inside the trailer so that I could use my satellite without running a new line. Now I can use the antenna or cable or satellite. I had to read through it a couple of times, but I'm pretty sure this was the link to the mod. that I used. Hope this'll help you.

    Rewiring Link
  • The coax cable on the outside is for hooking up to a park's cable feed...it is not designed for satellite. That said, there's most likely a splitter just upstream from the coax connection. You can remove that splitter and your cable may work depending on how it's wired. Best solution is to run a separate feed directly for you satellite. The sat dish has to have a direct connection without the splitter.....Dennis

Yes I installed an outdoor coax fitting on the side of our fiver and ran a direct line to the TV. My TV, at the time, had only one coax input so I had to install an AB switch to switch from the satellite coax to the on the roof antenna coax. It worked fine.

Great! Hope Radio Shack has what I need.
