Corrupt update problem

I been trying to fix a corrupt update problem for some time.

I finally found out how to find it and it turned out to be an update for the printer - which is apparently not needed since the printer is humming right along.

Can my problem be remedied by deleting this update file? If so how do I delete it from the system?

Man I am about to throw in the towel. The update that is failing is Hewlett Packard Null Printer. So I look at all the programs as suggested and just for grins delete the only two HP updates shown. I just shut down and still get the Install update and failed update.
  • If you take a moment and think about updates, I suggest you might look at the mfg and not MS.
Anybody can put a computer together and give you drivers for the equipement. That doesn't mean that their drivers will work without mfg updates.
The case in point is especially printers. Mfgs rarely update their drivers for older printers and instead make you buy new printers.
Another issue is with software programs you have installed that change Dlls that came with your system, or interface with the original dlls. Problems can and do arise that is impossible to figure out, so the update gets the blame.
  • Yes, do a system restore to a date prior to the update.

I have XP, Win 7 and Win 8 machines all set for automatic updates and don't ever seem to have a problem. I read about others having problems such as with the updates that took place last week but I didn't encounter any issues.

Just lucky I guess, but I keep all of my machines updated, even my virtual machines.
  • Don't have to worry about updates for XP soon. They are going to stop updating that old system shortly. April 8, 2014.
  • Just do a System Restore to a date before the update. This should correct the problem. If you have installed anything since the system restore date that you use, you will have to install it again. You will not lose any data files saved or email received.
  • Windows XP is one of the best most stable O/S MS ever developed. Id keep it forever.

Many updates for older O/S arent necessary. If you arent having problems with your current versions, I wouldnt update. If you feel you must, be selective and pick the ones that seem relevant to your needs. You can do this at the time you start the update process.

I guess the handwriting is on the wall now to upgrade OS. Hate that. My XP has been my workhorse setup for many years now. Does everything I need it to do...

My setup in the RV using the docking station is the same as it is in the stick house. I just just move my DELL M90 laptop from the house to the RV trailer and everything works all the same even down to the dual monitors haha... Only difference I see is maybe the speed of things...

Hopefully I will get away with just changing OS to WIN7. You know that is going to go off without a hitch...

  • With each XP update, my old desktop got quirkier and quirker.
New desktop running Win7 doesn't have the same quirks after an update.

I figured it was Microsoft's way of nudging people to upgrade before they stop supporting XP in the near future.

I too am seeing something different with my computer since the last Microsoft update that came out the last couple of weeks ago... Some of my pull down features using Windows Explorer doesn't work right everytime. I just switched to FIREFOX and it works great there... Hoping the next MS upgrade downloads will solve the problem haha...

I am still using Windows XP-PRO for OS here on my DELL M90 duty laptop and docking station...
