Is there a dedicated frequency/channel that receivers monitor for changes? What happens when a subscription is stopped? Does the sat company send the signal on a periodic basis to turn off the channel viewing or?
Once a receiver is on line and working there is no need to send any sort of update information but if a receiver goes for somewhere around 30 days without seeing a signal from the satellite (RV stored, dish stowed, etc.) then the only way to restore the receiver to life is for Dish or DirecTV to send a reactivation signal. For DirecTV that means they will send the signal via the 101 and Dish uses 119. If you make any changes to your service Dish or DirecTV must send that change via satellite but the change request is only send once. If the receiver is not online the receiver will not receive the request and nothing happens until you get it online, call back and have the request sent again.
If it is just a reactivation request, DirecTV allows you to go online to your DTV account and send the request yourself but Dish has no similar option. If you want to change your services you may be able to do some of this online (with the receiver connected) with DirecTV and Dish but any kind of service address change needs to be handled by a phone call and a representative or, in the case of Dish, their online chat feature and a representative.
