Does anyone know if you can limit Genie lines to less than 5

I take our DirecTV Genie on the road. I also have two DVR's that use two lines each. That adds up to 9, which is one more than the system will support.

I realize the DVR's can be setup for single line, but just wondering if there is any way to limit the Genie to 3 or 4 lines.

I also have a neighbor in a semi-permanent location, who I would like to share a couple of lines with. The only way I can do this now is to set both DVR's to single input and that would still only leave one line to spare.

If you want a laugh and have lots of time to waste, pose this question to DTV/ATT Tech Support.
  • Very sorry, my extreme apology. That's not the way I read it. You are correct. There is nothing wrong with that plan. I thought you were going to let him use a receiver on your account.

Glad you think you've figured me out. I don't see any theft involved. He's using his own receiver that he pays for and I'm just supplying the signal from my splitter to his receiver.

  • That is what I have been doing. I also have a mini at home. If I am correct I can replace one of the DVR's with the mini without using any of my 8 available, allowing one available to my neighbor. Otherwise I can set up both of the dvr's to single line.

My neighbor is in a tailgating campground and uses his Kingdome for sd. I told him I would tie into my splitter and loan him one of my channels, so he can get HD in his outdoor receiver. We all sit outside and watch his tv quite often. He has a 55", or so, and it is difficult for me to watch SD on that big screen.
  • The direct answer to your question is NO. You cannot limit the number of tuners the Genie uses so you either have to go with the SWM16 LNB or limit one of the other 2 DVR's to 1 tuner.

    Clicky

Have this in the stick house but don't care to go to the expense for what I want to do. This requires 4 separate coax run from a legacy lnb to the device and a 29v PI. Not going that far to help the neighbor. It would be handy to reduce the 5 lines required for the Genie but if that's impossible, as I believe it is, the issue is dead.
  • It appears that they now have SWM LNB's with built in multiswitch that support more than 8 tuners. One of those would be a better option than a legacy LNB and a SWM16.
