DTV Genie and Dish Question

In the past i took the DVR that would record two channels at the same time with us in the fifth wheel. Used the 18" round dish with dual LNB. No HD no biggie when camping.

Fast forward to present dilemma. We have one Genie in the home system with Whole House. So DW records a bunch of stuff using the Genie and was not aware that that those programs are on the Genie hard rive and would not be going with us.

So I told her I would just take the Genie receiver along. So I am confident that she will be able to watch the stuff already on the Genie hard drive.

My big dilemma is, how the Genie will lash up with my antiquated 18 inch round dish with dual LNB.

Folks, I gotta have the solution in two days and do not have the room to tote the slimline three around nor do i have an extra.

thanks

Dave
  • Thanks folks. I read up on the issue also on the PDF.

I have the SWM and inserter ordered via Amazon Prime and destined to be delivered to the daughter's house which will be the first stop.
  • Dave. Now might be a good time to upgrade your RV to match your house. Not easy nor a fun project, but in the end it should be totally worth it. SWM technology only requires one coax from the dish, and then if you have a wireless Genie all you need to do is get a piece of coax about 6 feet away for the video bridge.
  • No, the fastest way to get them would be Amazon where I got mine. But read the amended post I just made; you may still be able to view the recorded movies even without changing anything. You just won't be able to receive any broadcasts.
  • We live out in the sticks. Can I take a run into wally world and expect to be able to buy the items off the shelf there?
  • Since your 18" dish has two coax outputs you are in luck. You can convert it to the SWM system which the Genie uses by simply adding an SWM8 switch and a PI29 power inserter. Even though this isn't quite the same as what you have you can use the basic process shown in this document to guide you as to what to do. You will have to reset the Genie's antenna type setting to "18" round SWM"

    Using SWM with non-SWM hardware

If you can't get this done before your trip you should still be able to watch the movies recorded on the Genie. When you get the message "seeking satellite signal" just hit EXIT and then go to LIST and find your movies.
