Been using Thunderbird (TB) since the beginning. As mentioned, it will do what you want. Read and send AOL emails without going to their website. I use it for GMail, AOL, Outlook/Live.com email accounts.
BTW, TB is easier to setup than GMail as it too has email wizard for AOL.
