Firefox bookmarks

This is likely a basic question but it's driving me nuts.

I'm using FF 45.0.1.

I can't figure out how to put a new bookmark into an existing bookmark category.

For example I have category or directory of bookmarks for XYZ subject and I want to add a new bookmark to this specific category.

The only way I can figure to add a bookmark is to click the star symbol to the left of the bookmark symbol on the menu bar at the top of the screen (whatever that's called these days).

Of course when you do this it just dumps the bookmark into the unsorted bookmark area, so now I have a list of 'unsorted bookmarks' that need to be put in the right category.

I have two questions.

1) when I come across a website that I want to bookmark into a directory/category that is already established, how do I put that bookmark directly into said directory from the get-go.

2) I have bookmarks in the 'unsorted bookmark' area that I need to move to their proper directories, how do I do that?

It used to be pretty intuitive to do this in firefox but over the years the "improvements" continue to happen...

Thanks

That's why I use the Bookmarks toolbar with folders across the top of the browser window. If I want to bookmark something, I just drag it's URL from the address field to the appropriate folder on the toolbar. I don't need to take up a bunch of screen real estate to do it either.

CTRL-D (opens new book mark dialog with current page pre-filled)

In the box marked "Bookmark Menu" there is a drop down, there is a 2nd drop down to the right.. In THE BOX drop down and choose Choose.

The one in the box gives you recently saved to folders and a CHOOSE option (Choose gives you all your categories)

The one to the right of the box is the same as the Choose option, gives you the full list.

That's it.

Just checked it to be sure, This is posted with the latest FF

I move the mouse, dragging the tab to whatever folder I want it in, and
release the button. There it is now, in the folder.

Now, if you don't know how to make the bookmarks sidebar appear, here you go. Click on the icon to the right of the star... the icon for "show your bookmarks". When the drop-down menu appears, the first thing at the top should be "view bookmarks sidebar". Click it. Sidebar appears!

My point exactly..

You cannot move your Favorites into folders directly from the drop down Bookmarks menu.. That must be done in the Bookmarks SIDEBAR which is not easy for most folks to find now days.

In older versions of FF you HAD a ONE CLICK Favorites Side bar button which you could place on the favorites Tool Bar.

Newer versions of FF that button is no longer available to add to the tool bar.

Instead you now must perform at least a min of TWO different mouse clicks (think of it as two separate "operations") just to get the Favorites side bar to show up.

On top of that the only place you can get the side bar is to move your mouse to the right hand side of the screen which is far away from your navigation buttons on the LEFT side of the screen.

The result is you spend more time going back and forth across the screen..

Just one of the many "Innovations" that someone thought was better and not to mention following MS in their convoluted stupidity with their IE browser.

Since I work in a manufacturing environment I am used to always finding more efficient ways of doing things.. More mouse clicks, keystrokes and mouse movements = less efficiency = less work done = less productivity.

The good news is you CAN bring back many of the things that you have lost by using the addon Classic Theme Restorer.

Easy access to the sidebars for one.

That button went away somewhere around FF35-38..

Allows you to ONE click and instantly have your book mark side bar on the side.

Then you can simply MOVE by dragging and dropping your bookmarks into the respective folders. Makes it much easier.

Not sure as to why anyone would think using multi-key multi stroke "shortcuts" and or "F" buttons is an improvement.. Those are rather retro back to DOS and a bit before..

Or just hold down CTRL+B to open bookmark manager on the left. Grab the icon to the left of the URL or the browser tab itself, and drag into the desired folder.

When you click on the 'star' you should get a small pop up window. In this window you should see a choice that lets you choose which folder you want this bookmark to be placed.

Now that would make sense. Unfortunately on mine when I click the star there is no menu, it immediately puts a bookmark into the unsorted category. When I click the star it shows a little star flying over to the bookmark icon.

It depends on what version you are currently on.

Each newer version FF developers have REMOVED MANY useful features/buttons/customization's which have progressively made doing anything in FF a real pain in the rump if not impossible.

To combat this pure stupidity I resorted to a addon called CLASSIC THEME RESTORER.

Classic Theme Restorer now allows you to bring back pretty much all of the features and buttons the older versions had.. It allows YOU to control what and how the browser does.

Puts the control back into YOUR hands

Can you be more specific? On my screen there is no space above the tabs.
You can just right-click next just to the right of the + sign after the right-most tab. What I find even more useful is to use the Bookmarks Toolbar. I keep all of my bookmark folders there and they are immediately available for storing or using a bookmark. I just drag the address to the appropriate folder and let go.

Go all the way to the right past the last tab, right click in an open area next to the Minimize, Max, and Close icons, that will open a window and you can choose "Menu Bar" from that.

I either double-click-and-hold on the web site address or just click-and-hold the "info" icon immediately to the left of the address. This may be the web site name or an "i" in a circle. I then drag it over to the star/bookmark icon causing the list of bookmarks to open. I drag down to the appropriate folder and when it opens I release.
