Firefox v30 - conflicts

My laptop has been running fine but then I hit a problem in that my USB2 ports would not work; my USB3 ports did work but not the 2. I also found that my laptop wasnโ€™t shutting down and after 3 hours I forced the shutdown by holding down the power button.

Clearly something was wrong and I tied all this back to 16 June when I installed the latest Microsoft updates and Intel Graphics update. At this time I also updated Firefox to the latest version, 30.0.
I couldn't resolve the USB2 issue so did a system restore back to 12 June and everything worked fine. I put the USB2 problem down to the Intel update and reloaded all the Microsoft patches and everything worked fine. I installed the latest graphics update from Intel and all was still OK.

I then updated Firefox from v29.1 to v30 and on restart my USB2 ports did not work. A few minutes later I totally uninstalled Firefox, rebooted the laptop and the USB ports worked fine again as did normal shutdown. I imagine that the latest Firefox is creating a conflict somewhere but goodness where so I was wondering if anyone might be able to help.

Before posting to this forum I have just one a clean install of Firefox v30, and after a reboot mu USB ports are not recognised.

My system is running Windows 8.1 64bit and I have Kaspersky Internet Security v14.0.0.4651(g) loaded โ€“ all are up-to-date.
As I mentioned, everything was fine until I updated Firefox with the latest patch.

With no Firefox I have now had to default to IE 11 so any help would be greatly appreciated. :?:h

Thank you all for your replies.

I use mu USB3 port to run my dual band Wi-Fi dongle so that port is permanently occupied. The USB2 ports I use for my printer, satnav, camera and everything else I have to connect via USB.

In Device Manager I am not showing any conflicts but whenever I connect a device to the USB2 ports they remain invisible whilst Firefox v30 is installed - satnav, printer, camera, usb extender and so on. As far as the computer is concerned they just do not exist.

I find it very strange myself as to how hardware is being affected and what/how resources are being conflicted but all I can say is that they are. Using the link from the Moderator, I have re-installed v29.01 and everything is fine again. I have Firefox loaded and my USB2 ports are working. I have disabled automatic updates for Firefox though and will probably wait until v32 is released before I try updating again.

I read somewhere that someone lost their touchpad mouse after installing Firefox v30 so at least someone else is in the same boat as me albeit with a different hardware problem.

Most folk seem OK with v30 so it must be down to individual computers/laptops and how they handle resources and software installed. I don't like to be beaten by a machine but sometimes you can only reason so far and the work around for me has been to go back to v29.01.

Thanks again.

Steven

I have FF v31 installed on my laptop running Win 8.1.1. No problem here. Didn't see problems with versions prior to 31 either.

I don't believe Firefox can affect the functionality of your USB2 ports in WIN 8.1 though it may appear so on the surface. If it did, there would be a number of complaints on the net about the issue? I've had no problems with USB2 at all with v30. Does Device Manager(devmgmt.msc) indicate a yellow exclamation with Firefox v30 installed under Universal Serial Bus controllers?

What do you use your USB2 ports for with Firefox installed? If its printing from the browser, then that could be caused by a Firefox profile issue. Either corrupt or has some type of PUP? Did you create a new(clean) profile in Firefox as a check?

Another issue is to check to make sure your AV software and Firewall is not blocking Firefox access to USB2 ports for a security reason?

In the meantime, here is the Mozilla official archive link Firefox v29.01 for EN-US or EN-GB if you don't ready have them.

Thank you for your reply and I suppose I will have to wait on the next update and try again.

What's annoying is that IE11 isn't fully compatible with all sites whereas Firefox tends to be. I've just had to install Firefox v30 again in order to print off some boarding passes as with IE11 the website just stuck. After printing I had to uninstall Firefox again otherwise I would lose my USB ports.

I would like to find a copy of Firefox v29 but all sites I've seen only offer the latest version.

I've read before that Mozilla release their latest updates with any support and then wait to see what happens and if the forums can resolve any issues - don't know if this is true or not but it is very strange that the update alone knocks hardware.

Thanks again.
