Free TV streaming (for select areas)

Ran across this today...

LoCast

It's banned in Michigan for some reason but available in other large states. Claims to be 100% free streaming of broadcast networks.
  • according to LoCast, you can't set in L.A. and stream NY

they are required to have the Antenna system and internet connection in your city area

maybe Mi will not allow them do this, IDK

when i checked the website it asked permission for my location, then said NOT available here

seems like anybody doing what Dutch says he is doing needs a VPN or Proxy to indicate to the servers he is in the Baltimore broadcast area

How can Locast be "banned" in MI or any other state? Does the state block their website?
  • I'm currently watching one of the Baltimore locals that were just added to Locast, but since I'm in Florida, watching that channel OTA is out. ;)

Michigan is a state in flux. what was banned last year may soon be allowed and the other way around. More than that I will not say here.

But it may also be that the STATIONS in MI do not want to be streamed over the internet.

But then they broadcast.. and that's now I get 'em why burn up bandwith when I wave a Windward Sensor with wing man and sensor pro?
  • They are asking for donations. No obligation. That's different than charging a subscription fee. And that's why Aereo lost their case. It wasn't free. As important to the Aereo case as rebroadcasting was also the DVR.

I'm not clear why people would want to do this anyway. For areas within 25 or 30 miles to the broadcast towers, a $25 indoor antenna will get lots of stations. Couple that with an OTA DVR like a Tablo or a Fire TV Recast. Add a streaming channel package like Sling TV and you've got more than you can get with cable for fraction of the price.
  • That's interesting..... I wonder how/why Michigan banned it? :?

Here's a link to a story in the New York Times. I remember reading about Aereo a few years ago. Too bad they were forced out.
