Garmin confusion.....

I dont understand garmin these days.. I have a garmin nuvi 1300 and I like it alot. BUT it was purchased before they came with lifetime map updates. I saw a sales ad for a newer garmin WITH lifetime maps for 89.00, So I figure that maybe the lifetime maps update you can purchase seperately has gone down in price.....NOPE, its still $99.00. Sorry garmin, I guess I will just use my cell phone navigation with free map updates..... Anyone wanna buy a used garmin?
  • For the past several years the Garmin Lifetime Map add on goes on sale before Christmas for $59. This happens every year. Look on Amazon because Garmin's Lifetime Maps are frequently discounted way below the $89 list price. You are purchasing a code number that comes from Garmin or a card with this code number on it that will activate Lifetime maps for an Garmin that was not sold with Lifetime Maps. You will then be able to download new maps whenever they are released - which happens about four to five times a year.

Check on Amazon.com for Garmin lifetime update. $80. It's thru Garmin.
  • I gave my old Garmin GPS to my wife three years ago when I upgraded to a larger screen. She just replaced hers with a new Garmin ($89) with lifetime updates for less than one update would have cost for the old one.

My larger one has lifetime updates, Lane Assist, and the Low Clearances app on it. Lane Assist is handy with the RV in traffic. I see no need for the RV model.
  • I checked with Garmin about purchasing the RV 760. My old Garmin was really outdated and the cost of new maps was too high. The sales person told me that they would allow me to trade in my old system. This is what I did. The trade in value varies with unit. I sent the old unit in and they sent me the new unit at the discounted price. Worked for me.

If your Garmin has an SD card slot, you can download the entire map update to your computer, then install it onto the SD card.

x2 ... with that extra storage and depending on your model, you can also do fun stuff like subscribe to the Garmin BIRDSEYE Topo service, and overlay your base map with USGS / Canadian topographical maps
    For $30:R

I feel the same way. My Garmin is old, but gives me updates via a subscription. My problem is I can't download all maps due to memory or shall I say lack of. I am using a phone GPS along with my Garmin. I check on-line for low bridges. I know Garmin has a unit for RV use now, but I am not going to fork over $400. Unfortunately, cell phone does not have the bridge feature yet.

I still like my Garmin for auto use.

  • If you have a smart phone, there is an app for low clearances. Allstays Low Clerances app is $1.99.
