Getting Direct TV with MotoSat dish

Thanks for all the assistance on my problem of using a MotoSat satellite dish on our rig, and using an older RCA receiver to raise the dish and locate the satellite, and then trying to watch it on the newer direct tv receiver (which cannot raise the dish) I tried this the other day and just couldn't get it to work. Not sure what the problem was. I used the RCA receiver to raise the dish and it seemed to locate the satellite, and was peaking to fine tune it. (I can't tell exactly because this receiver has been turned off by Direct TV so there is no channel 100, not even an access card)
Then when I put the satellite dish into the new receiver, it says on the screen, error 771, searching for satelite signal. When I check the transponder signal strength, everything is zero. I called direct tv and they made sure the access card was marreid to this receiver, but he can't authorize the unit if it's not locked onto the satellite. We worked a couple of hours on this with several calls into Direct TV to no avail. Not sure why the new unit isn't recognizing the signal. Might have to scrap the system and get a Wineguard Traveler. Their sk-swm3 model assures full direct tv programming. Any last thoughts?
I was using an A/B switch on the satellite in coaxial and then separate cables to both boxes. When that didn't work, I used a signal splitter from "satellit in" to each of the two boxes. Also tried just running a direct line to the new box when the dish was up.

I don't have the Moto Sat dish, but did go through the same problem when I had to give up my old receiver. You have to set the Direct TV receiver to the dish type you have. Setting receiver for Dish type/size

Excellent advice. I can access the menu on the old receiver. Didn't think of that, to verify what I'm locked in on. Since it has no access card, and is turned off from direct tv product, I'll see what I can get displayed.
Thanks

Can you access the menu on the old receiver? If so then you need to get to the signal meter screen on that box during the search to see if it is actually finding 101 and showing a signal strength. If not, the search is not going properly or you have a bigger issue with the antenna itself. While not cheap, the Winegard Trav'ler is an excellent product!
What I post is my 2 cents and nothing more. Please don't read anything into my post that's not there. If you disagree, that's OK.
Can't we all just get along?
