Although dish size does have some impact on signal strength, the real limiter is how far down toward the horizon the dish will tune. In many domes and the Winegard Trav'ler, that is 15-20 degrees above the horizon. With the satellites located above the equator, this means that about the furthest north you can tune their signal is the Juneau latitude. In fact, I have gotten DirecTV from Douglas, four miles south of Juneau across the channel. We were on a Trav'ler without modifications. By playing with the antenna geometry (I put a nickel in the antenna LNB arm pinch point) and got DirecTV in Valdez. Another major problem is that when tuning to within 15 degrees of horizontal in Alaska this puts a lot of mountains in the way.
