I need advice

I have a sattelite dish mounted on the roof of my 5th wheel but all to often we can't use it because of the large trees at our favorite campground. We are thinking about buying a portable self alighining dish that we can set on a table. How do I hook it up to thr RV?The only connection on the side of the RV is for cable. I don't like the thought of having a wire going through a window. Thanks for your help.

If you're using Dish, I'd recommend the Winegard Pathway X2 paired with a VIP211Z receiver. It acquires the signal automatically, is portable, and can acquire both the east and west coast satellites. We used ours from California to Maine, and had zero issues.

X-2 on the Pathway X-2, Mine can connect to the outside cable tv port in one of my compartments for one receiver use, other wise I do put the two cables through the window. Works great. You can surely pay someone or do it yourself cabling so you won't have to go through a window. Get out the drill. I never use the roof antenna anymore, and was glad to ditch the tripod and dish 500.
  • Thanks to all. I think I now have a pretty good idea of what I have to do or have someone do for me. Thanks again.

  • My 5er initially had a single coax input for cable. But it came into a dual coax wall plate in a cabinet under the living room TV, with a short coax jumper cable between the two wall plate connectors. To use my Tailgater I could just remove the jumper and connect a 3' long coax cable from one of the wall plate connectors to my sat receiver, and connect my Tailgater to the external cable TV connection. To use cable I had to put the jumper back in place.

But to avoid having to mess with the coax jumper, I later added another weather proof external coax connector with rubber cover connected to a new inside coax wall plate at the sat receiver. I just drilled a hole in the side of the trailer near the TV in an area when I could remove a cabinet side panel and see the outer wall, making it easy to connect the outside connector to the inside connector. So now I have the original input for cable and a new dedicated input for sat.
  • Suggest you get a carry out automatic unit. The Tailgater is only for Dish . I had a Wingate unit which worked with my Direct.
    Good luck

  • I have a Dish Tailgater setup that works really well. To make it work, your wiring has to be direct from the dish to the reciever. The other self-aiming type of dishes require the same thing. They need two way communications and to send 12v power back down the cable to power the dish mechanism. So when I say nothing between the dish and the box, I mean absolutely nothing - especially those antenna booster boxes almost all RV's have.

Normally, the junctions, splitters and switches inside the walls of your RV prevent this from working. So it is a bit of work to either eliminate some of these things, or drill a hole and run a new cable from outside to inside.
  • Run new wire from outside to receiver's location, with no breaks. That is what I did. I put my connection in the electrical box so it is protected from the weather. With a selection of power passing A/B switches and power passing splitters, I can use that connection for campground cable/satellite at home/satellite on the road with my automatic Vuqube Flex 2100. Here is a diagram:

  • If you have a sat dish on the roof you will have to modify the wiring. Easy to do but trying to explain how would be very long. You need some diverters. Not spliters but diverters to tie in cables.
  • Previous owner drilled a hole through the side wall. Installed the proper connectors readily available at CW or other place. Ran the inside cable to the sat box.
  • If you're using Dish, I'd recommend the Winegard Pathway X2 paired with a VIP211Z receiver. It acquires the signal automatically, is portable, and can acquire both the east and west coast satellites. We used ours from California to Maine, and had zero issues.
