IE wont boot up

My OS is windows 8. When I click on IE the page comes up blank. My dell lap top came with IE in it. It was working fine then it just stopped. I'm sure I did some thing wrong but I don't know what it was. I have tried to down load it again but that doesn't work either.

There is supposed to be a way to turn IE on and off,but I can't find how to do that either.
We now have a 2018 Ford Explorer,2wheel drive.

If this were a medical forum this thread would be saying ... I think you have a broken leg, but then again it could be cancer. Here, see if you can get around on this crutch. If you can't get up on the crutch just try hopping around on one leg.The doctor is busy with people who are seriously sick and will get to you when he can if you don't die first.

I did some more poking around. When I click on the IE icon the page comes up blank, but the header with bookmarks, tools, help, ect,is still there. If I click on the bookmarks they come up. So it seems that I have only lost the IE home page.:h

I called tech support and they were so busy they took my info and said they would call back in one hour. That was an hour and a half ago.

My computer won't let me down load a new browser. I tried to down load safari and it wouldn't load. So I guess I'll try google chrome.

Make sure to turn off your popup blocker before you try to download a new browser.

For the first time in many years, I will post that you have a possibility of malware or virus.
Losing a home page is usually done by malware. Some of these come when downloading a program that you want to try out, or even updates to current programs such as Java or Shockwave. I spent over an hour just to get rid of an home page malware that came with Java.
If you cannot download a new browser, that is kind of suspiciously like a virus.
But as GDE posted, it might be a just some settings.

Perhaps a browser Hijack?

You CAN (or at least with older versions of IE you could) make any website a "home page". Typically under tools there should be a home page or start page address line. Just put in the address of a website that you want to come up and it should start each time you open the browser... Check to see if it is set to a blank page...

Can you visit MS home page if you type it in?

On edit..

Perhaps this may be helpful?

There may not anything wrong with your IE, it may be your network settings which are preventing your browser from reaching out to the wobbly web.

IE will startup the default blank screen if no valid Internet connection is found.

There is some known issues with how W8 deals with your wireless and network connections. Basically in a nutshell MS removed important tools which you used to be able to use to manage network and WiFi connections easily.

If your Wifi or network connection has changed or been removed you may not be able to modify or remove the old connection.

I believe there is some workarounds for this but your gonna need to search MS website for the info..

Additionally there may be a third party program you can get (not free of course) which brings back some of the network tools functions which MS removed..

I would not do the 8.1 upgrade. IE 11 has caused me a lot of problems and when you do the 8.1 update you are stuck with IE 11. If you have Windows 8 with IE 11 you can remove the IE 11 update and it will revert to IE 10. When you return to IE 10, click Help, then Internet Explorer, then uncheck the box Install New Versions Automatically.

Definitely do the 8.1 update if you haven't already. Fwiw, my internet provider with its built in antivirus runs IE terribly, try the Chrome browser instead.

When a page comes up blank, try clicking on the toolbar and adding the site into the "compability view settings" option.

This will help diagnose where your true problem lies. IE 11.0.9600 is having difficulty overcoming some of these problems right now.

try disabling virus protection and then see what happens. MS says it is a known issues that some VP will not allow some programs to open in windows 8 if that's the problem make sure all updates for VP and windows including 8.1 are installed
