I had a 1st gen N7 that I used for a year then passed on to my daughter when I got a 2nd gen N7. Both tablets are used daily and are going strong with zero build or quality issues.
I sort of did the same thing only I gave the newer version to my son and I just kept the older version. The older version continues to do the job for me.
